Will give it a test run at the weekend.

Thanks once again for the replies.
Glad you got something you like mate. I'm a fan of Lowe Alpine, they make good bags, out of my 'middle sized' bags, its a Lowe that I use 95% of the time. The main thing is its comfortable, if you're going to be wearing it for any length of time that's the most important thing.

Thanks.

I do a lot of walking. Six miles on a work day and an average of 15 on my days off, of which those are over hills and in all weathers. I must write up some 'top tips' for this forum, when I get some spare time, as I have noticed that most advice, from the YouTube prepping community, tends to come from someone who is overweight and has only walked around their local area, with an Army Backpack full of useless junk.

Anyway, back to the new rucksack. It is light, with a rigid back and can be made to be very tight and also released, easily. One nice touch is it has emergency instructions (six blasts of the whistle and all that) on the inner flap.

Full report in the Equipment section on Sunday.

Can't comment on which is best for your buck but few seem waterproof.
IDE want mine waterproof ,who wants wet kit ?.

And I don't want to keep getting out the rain cover ,buy a waterproof bag in the first place that's of size and comfy.
Amazing just how quickly the lot gets wet if you get caught out.

You can get these in different sizes all the way up to rucksack size. I've got a number of them and they're handy.

Those look cool guys. Thanks for the link.
I just don't get why bags arnt waterproof, in the first place. Yes you can stick a plastic bag inside or waterproof liner but lots of back packs have several pockets or outer compartments .
In the past I've ruined maps ,matches soaked kit .
Even a comm unit got wet once so I couldn't use it .
Even food stuffs have been spoilt .

Will pick up one of those though. Ta

Back when I was a yoof and mad keen on walking we just used bin bags to put our stuff in, I've got dry sacks all the way up to about 40L now, in fact 1 probably larger (maybe 60-70L) some skirmished while still in the Mob and a load of smaller ones for rucksack pockets, or grab bags having a few different ones inside rucksacks. I get your point that it would be easier just to proof the bags but I've always been able to work round it.

Is it not possible to proof the fabric post-purchase? Texnik or Scotchgard...?

I havnt tried a bag but havnt had any luck waterproofing fabrics that were not proofed from factory. I've tried lots of proof products even fabsil and gold product .
I agree if it's not proofed from factory adding a waterproof liner is the only way.
Just awkward as most have several outer pouches pockets so then only the inner bag is then proofed.
Just seems stupid it not being waterproof in first place

My next purchase will be
Keeping it simple

Weight.... Gram-weenies would rather be cold, wet and half-dead then buy a rucksack that weighs four ounces more
