Checking in

Post by womble »

Hi folks.

New to the "prepping" scene. I didn't even know there was a name for something a bit less extreme than the wilder-eyed "survivalist" until I saw the Channel 4 show Hunted last year, where one of the participants identified themselves as a prepper (IIRC, they didn't do outstandingly well).

So any progress to date along the route to being "prepared" is mostly accidental! Or based on geeky wannabe "paranoia" :) I'm a gamer, roleplaying (live and tabletop), computer and the rest of the gamut, and have, in those environments had to consider some of the scenarios that preparedness as a lifestyle hopes to address or mitigate. The family has always camped (civilised style) and I love lists. My first EDC (though I didn't know that was what it was) was back in the 90s: a "shoulder-holster" style manbag with a SAK, a leatherman, a zippo etc to go along with wallet and keys. In my LARPing, I'm often cooking over open fires for a dozen or more people. The thinking through "problem" scenarios, from getting stuck in town without a lift via going off the grid to evade government oppression to the total, persistent collapse of civilisation as we know it has leaked into daily life.

I believe there is a small, non-negligible chance that I and/or mine will be caught up in some excrement/air circulation device interaction and I'm looking to be prepared.

Oh, and I'm a bit of a kit junkie, and a lot of a list junkie. :) Comes from prepping my characters for all those Dungeons/Shadowruns/spec ops/space adventures in the last 35 years or so!

My sister is into the LRP thing too. I couldn't quite get my teeth into my myself, but the chance to have a fire in the woods was great.

Welcome.

Aye, gaming is great mental preparation; lets you think through "unthinkable" situations. LARP has the added practicalities; I won't try and claim combat is 100% real, but when you're deep "in character", it's more urgent than anything I ever did on the Dojo mat or rugby field, and I would never have got the chance to skipper a 1500-man line of battle in any other situation. And it involves camping. With some really big tents :)

While I consider TEOTWAWKI only a very remote possiblity, I think I need to prep for the Environment Agency/Council/Fire Service/Police knock on the door warning of danger in the area (whether from industrial accident, or human intervention) meaning we need to bug out for a while. Sure, there'll be schools and community halls being used as barracks for the evacuees, but I'd rather be more comfy because I had the foresight to have go-bags with useful stuff in them. Vehicle preparedness is important, too. Wife and I do a lot of travelling around this Sceptred Isle, and being prepared for transport mishaps and inconveniences is probably more important than having a year's water stashed away. Then again, it wouldn't be terribly surprising to me if there was some sort of economic collapse which meant a drastic change in peoples' respect for the law, either. Nor is pandemic a scenario to ignore. Being ready for all eventualities though, is going to take, in the words of George Harrison, "time, and a whole lotta money".
