Aquarium for water storage

Post by lincsprepper »

Hi,

I've recently moved into a new house and the previous owners have left a 150l tropical aquarium behind. I figure this will make a great water storage prep which won't attract any unwanted attention. I'm unsure as to what equipment I need to buy in order to make the water fit for consumption in an emergency, anyone on here got any recommendations?

One of these bad boys will square you away.

There are other filters out there too. I was made aware thanks to the forum (although I'm sure I'd have figured it out ;) ) about the potential for fish tanks, we've got 2 on the go, plus a pond in the garden (well 1 with a leak now and a new one in the process of being completed). If you're using it as a fish tank, ie running the pumps etc then its using lecky, not a problem if you intend to keep fish in them but as a water supply you'd be just as well getting some of these and stashing them.

Or of course both. :D Enjoy the new house.

Thanks for the advice there deeps! I'll pick one up next payday and I might get a couple of the containers to hide in the shed. how long do you leave your water stores before changing them?

64 thousand dollar question that mate, there is at least one thread on here about it, I've got water tucked away in 6 25L butts and 4 of them have been in a year and 2 for about 4 months. If I was being sensible I'd change them every month but from experience as a child water keeps for a long time and I'm a lazy bugger. Have a wee nosey around and you'll see others take on it. I've got some of these for emergency use (see below), it will depend on what you're prepping for how long you expect to live off any water reserves etc. Mine are in dark blue containers in a dark garage so not getting the sunlight required to make things grow. Make sure you give them a good clean out first and touch wood, they should be fine for ages but I'm far from an expert.

If you've got a sawyer or two then it gives you options for manky water but if you have the opportunity its always worth a boil. Its bad enough normally if you have liquid ejecting from you at all angles but if things are already pear shaped and you need to be healthy its something to avoid especially if you have young or infirm to care for.

I change mine if green stuff appears (this hasn't yet in over a year) mine is kept in 25 litre food grade containers.

Prior to using I would use oasis sterilising tabs, 25 tabs per container (1 tab does 1 litre) or boil just to be safe
