20+ years ago I started stocking a pantry, didn't even know there was a specific name to what I did back then.
I was a single parent witha disabled baby, who was in and out of hospital, there was times when I thought the bed should have had a reserved sign on it. I quickly realised that going out for groceries was impossible when your kid had just been discharged from hospital. So I first started with a stock of 2 week groceries and an extra 2 packs of loo paper and the usual ton of baby requirements.
I didn't have a BOB or a GHbag I did have a hospital bag packed permanently with clothes toiletries food and some cash, was once caught out without that bag when my parent were on holiday I had £16 in my purse for a taxi and a 7 day hospital stay if it hadn't been for the kindness of the ward sister who brought me some toiletries a couple of t shirts and some new undies [ i did re-emburse her] I would have found a trying time very difficult.
Over the years my pantry has expanded, it is my saftey net for difficult times

Hi Ro
Reading this, I think maybe that's when I had my first glimmers of prepping too. Not an ill baby, but just having a time of babies/hospitals and poverty. OH was always on strike & I had to have a stash of staple foods. Maybe that's when it all started for me, and when we hit a spell with more money I sort of forgot about it
