Hi all,
After getting myself as financially prepared as I possibly can by paying off all consumer debt, I have now decided to move things up a gear and start on food preps. I have always had a few extra tins in the cupboard and a blanket in the car, but apart from that I am completely new to it all. My aim is to start this week by adding a few essentials to the food shop so that within a few weeks I have at least a couple of days worth of food for myself and my girfriend and our two dogs. After that I will aim to get an entire week's worth, then a month's worth, and ultimately 6 to 8 week's worth which I personally believe could significantly improve our chances of survival should S really hit the F economy-wise, as well as any more likely scenarios such as a prolonged power cut, flood etc.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to start they would be very much appreciated. My initial ideas for this week are some bottled water, a bag or two of rice, a few tins of vegetables and some tinned meat and fish, which would make a few half-decent meals that my girlfriend and I would both like.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Welcome Jeebus, I hope you find what you're looking for here, you seem to have a good approach to it, at least for me. There's loads of threads on here that will be of interest to you, have a good root around and enjoy.

Hi Jeebus,
If everyone thought as you do the country would be so much more resilient, sadly they don't.
You'll find loads of info here on food and water storage, although perhaps not so much about food for your dogs, so I'll just mention Spam and Corned Beef - both of which have long shelf life and my dog loves them. The advantage over dried dogfood is that you can eat them too.
Welcome aboard.

Remember store what you eat...& Eat what you store & replace & rotate it
No point filling a cupboard with stuff you won't eat
Eat it before it goes out of date (granted tins store ok )
As you eat it buy more and bring old stuff to the front so the new "fresh" stuff goes into storage.....
Plan meals in advance to make the most of your supplies...
Ensure you have a way of collecting / storing water and cleaning / purification methods
Make lists of what you need to avoid buying crap you don't
Take your time and plan plan plan.....
In Lou of the survival nuts bug out bag... Think about a "hotel bag' as in most local " disasters your going to end up in either a sports hall or hotel. Not the woods

Welcome, jeebus! A very practical approach, I'm sure you'll fit right in
What I would add is something to cook with, if the power's out for a little while - a single burner camping stove is fine, very accessible and very cheap.
I'd also think about basic first aid - you might have it already, actually, just thinking about ibuprofen, paracetemol, plasters, TCP, that kind of thing. And you'll find many, many discussions here on toilet rolls

packs of water purification tablets are also quite cheap. A Steripen comes under the "inexpensive" category and a distiller starts to get less affordable, but these things may help with drinking water
