Out of date UHT

Post by Deeps »

Following on from Jamie's tests, I opened up a 6 month past the 'use by' date carton of UHT today and it was fine in tea. Well as fine as UHT milk is in tea or coffee, I'll try it in a packet pasta for my lunch and report back, assuming I'm not in the hospital getting my stomach pumped. :D

UHT milk is one of the few preps that we keep that we don't regularly use and I like to keep maybe half a dozen or so litres and end up ditching them so its good to know that they keep. I'll maybe try and let the next oldest go a year out of date and see how it is.

There's a reason its a prep that we don't use normally. ;) Was going through some stuff yesterday and noticed the date so thought I'd try it before binning it, its not really my bag either mate but it would be good to know long it lasts. There was a packet of midget gems that had 'crossed the line' too, I can vouch for them being fine. :D

I've found that when it gets a while out of date it can sometimes go lumpy as the fat separates out if it's not the skimmed stuff, I've never had one that did me any harm or tasted off, but it is a bit unsightly, a good few hard shakes of the carton before opening it helps with that.
You get used to the slightly weird taste of it, my Mrs hates it and we only use it on the boat, but I spent a lot of time in France when I was a kid and fresh milk was almost impossible to get back then, so I got a bit of a taste for it!

This was semi skimmed stuff so maybe that's why it wasn't lumpy. Packet pasta test to follow, just in from walking the dugs.

Well the results are in......and quelle surprise.....it was absolutely fine. I add extra dried veg to these packets which maybe helped disguise the UHT flavour but no ill effects so far.

Im the same as your wife, I cannot stand the stuff, when in Portugal I couldn't have a tea or coffee for the whole two weeks, just the smell of that stuff turns my stomach.

Lumpy milk! Lumps, in milk?! Oh heck that's truly a retch reaction from me

I use UHT pretty much everyday. Works out better for me as a 4pint will go off before i can finish it.

I do get what people mean though - the taste/smell can be odd if you're not used to UHT.

you could try making yogurt just add a tablespoon mix it in and keep it warm in a flask
