Never a borrower or lender be.......

Post by poppypiesdad »

Wee follow up from our " bug out " to Kelso in the Borders
From now to Sunday we've bugged out to the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh

Back in Kelso we had a stranded horsebox that was next to us and the wife " kinda knew" them we so the wife asked me to help them. We were about to move off so I left them with the starter charger , generator .
See the problem yet

So today at the show .
Did the morning thing , came back thought let's top the batteries up .

Get the Genny out . Top up the petrol. Pull the start cord and wham
Piston solid.

Have they not put most of the engine oil in the cylinder
So it's been on its side or top or both
2 hours
Lots of f**k and Baws
It's fixed

So the old saying

NEVER A BORROWER OR LENDER BE .

Cheers

JAMIE

Learnt that lesson long ago, explaining to people why I won't lend them something often offends.

I often follow your quote with:

"Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. "
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

I won't lend anything out, i've had enough tools come back broken or covered in crap (i keep a very tidy workshop) to know better.

I've found that you can sometimes tell by the way people look after their own stuff - if it's in poor condition, you know yours isn't going to get looked after.

But i'll always err on the side of caution, why should i risk my hard earned stuff?

Ouch!

Erm, does your wife agree with you now, about lending out?

Some time ago working on site I had what I called the "dot system" . When I got a new saw I put a dot on the handle ( as well as my name) . Then when I get the next saw that gets a dot and the first saw gets an additional dot and so on. Thus if I had four saws the one dot would be nice and sharp and the four dotter the bluntest . So if anyone I didn't really trust to look after the tools wanted to borrow one they wouldn't get one with less than three dots on it.
I also have an axe with a cranked almost pistol grip type of handle which I've seen described as , I think , a turners axe. Again if someone asks I sometimes offer that one and they tend to change their minds and I rarely get asked nowadays.

All true, have lent stuff out, never to be seen again or damaged, so try not to borrow stuff out.

what really bugs us, is lending stuff, it comes back broken - and they don't tell you  so when you go to use it yourself, then you discover the problem. Usually when the shop/store is shut so you can't even get the bits to mend it.
I hate lending my sewing machine, now this is going to sound nutty :tinfoil but even if they don't touch the settings or do any damage, it just doesn't FEEL right after someone else has been on it!

My oh got our ladders back - 2 years after we lent them, trouble was we couldn't remember who had them and he only got them back because he spotted them in someones garage or they'd probably still have them.
