I really dislike ham-fisted people using my best cutting tools - planes and chisels. Often, well intentioned people will attempt to sharpen said tools and cock it up, so I have a "sacrificial" set to lend to those who I don't consider fit for the best stuff.

On the other hand, there are people who understand a good tool, and I enjoy lending them a good tool, knowing that they will see the quality in it and return it in the same condition. There is a certain pride in having a skilled man use your tools and produce a fine piece with them.

As much as i hate lending out my tools, people are always happy to lend me theirs, because they know they'll come back in better condition!

I keep my tools in top condition, so if i borrow something and it's not up to my standard, i'll make sure it is- firstly for me to use it, and secondly to send it back in the correct condition!

Same with anything that has replaceable parts like the welder i borrow on occasion, i always buy a new roll of wire and some mig tips - to make sure there's plenty and to say thanks.
If i borrowed a tool and broke it, i'd either repair it at my expense, or buy a new one, again at my expense, its the old rule: "you break it, you've bought it"

Why can't everyone do the same? :x
