Newbie prepper wanting to learn

Post by Zunzuncito »

Hi All,

I've been looking at this forum (and some others) for a about 6 months and finally decided to join. I'm based in the West Midlands and am very new to prepping, literally just starting out. I was a bit put off initially as a lot of the info/website about prepping I found seemed to be a bit militant or extreme for my liking but this site has re-assured me that there are others like me out there. I don't believe in the 'everyone for themselves mentallity' and think community and helping each other is key to any form of surviving any level of unexpected event/disaster.

I finally decided to take the plunge and join the site as I have not long bought my first home after a long time of renting and moving about. Now I have somewhere stable I want to start being able to support myself and my family, no matter what the scenario. As this is all quite new to me I want to start small but want to then build on this - without getting to overwhelmed or obsessed. I want to learn but also to be able to help and discuss prepping with like minded people.

Hope this isn't too much info!

Welcome! Sounds like a really good idea to get yourself set up to support your family. You need to settle in to your new house of course (congratulations!), and find out what the garden's like, what the soil fertility is like (get a compost bin now!).

I always think the most important thing is to get enough food in store so that you don't *have* to go out or even have a supermarket delivery if you came down with the flu, enough water to withstand the first 24 hours of a burst water main, and a decent first aid kit. Then build from there - as you already know, there's so much on here. And it sounds like you really want to build links within your (new?) community. What do you think you'll do as first steps for that?

Thanks for the Welcome :D

We've been in our new house a few months now so starting to feel settled now. Re the garden I already have a compost bin and two water butts - good for prepping, my bank balance and the environment. I don't know a great deal about gardening, learning as a go really but we are lucky in that the people who lived here before us had planted two apple trees and a plum tree - all of which are producing fruit or just about to which is lovely. I also have rhubarb growing - which sadly I don't like but my family do.

Arzosah your starter pointers seem a good idea and nice small steps to begin with - first aid kits I already have covered as I work in the H&S/First Aid world so have quite a bit of experience regarding that side of things. In terms of building links with my new community I've started by trying to get to know my neighbours to begin with (who all seem very pleasant) and I've also joined Streetlife https://www.streetlife.com/ which is helping me learn what's going on locally and where people seem to try and help one another.

That all sounds really good, ZZC - I've looked at streetlife, and get updates, but I haven't actually joined in yet, bad me

Glad to hear you've got first aid down pat too :) you're doing great already.
