There's a scene in Falling Skies, the alien invasion tv series, where exactly that happens, at the beginning of season 2  (getting a fire going, not toilet paper, cos that would be ... )

One thing I immediately liked about this forum is that everyone is preparing just as much for the "everyday" things going wrong as for the apocalyptic things. And in reality, the thing I'd need to prepare for at work is the trains being out of action - so perhaps my preps should be more like finding out how I'd get home by bus. It seems to me that the chances of every form of transport being out of action are so remote that I should prep for the more likely stuff first. How do people approach that?
It's a really good question ... 7/7 .... Transport all over London ground to a halt - I asked for stories on here about people who'd been affected, when I was writing my kindle book, and a few walked 10 miles or so to get wherever public transport was still running, even if it wasn't in their direction of travel, and eventually managed to get home from there.
Certainly, though, we all need to prepare in a "graduated" way - flooding often stops trains but buses and coaches can make diversions more easily and get through, for instance, yes. Leaves on the line! Whoever thought we'd have to prep for autumn leaves on the line !
I would say that one of the simplist preps is to have an amount of cash on you so if transport is only affected locally after that walk you then have the funds to buy extra tickets or pay for a taxi. That cash could also serve to get you a meal or a hotel room should such a thing be possible or necessary . A hundred or so isn't going to make much of an impact on a get home bag , weight or space wise , and even better fits nicely into a pocket. At the last resort it could even be used to get a fire going or as toilet paper
If it's for that use it'll have to be £50 notes... I'm sensitive..

Reminds me of a joke about someone on the toilet finding no paper and asking if anyone else has some . When they don't he then asks if they have change for a twenty :D

I was thinking more that it wouldn't really , well , do the job.
Sticking with toilet paper but at the same time going off topic a bit . We all tend to keep a stock of such stuff as part of our preps but how about keeping an amount ( if you can get hold of it ) of old fashioned izal medicated . If the world goes tits up then you have something to use , if it doesn't then you have something that will have appreciated in monetary value ,

You can get the hotel/trade ones for about the same price, a lot more on them and a LOT softer.

As we are having a loo discussion, I have these permanently in the car, the emergency bag, the stash and in the suitcase for happier holidays!

Not the cheapest way to buy loo roll, but it's compact, in sheets and has no scratchy bits!

I have a packet of baby wipes in the car, handy for cleaning up after a scoff at Mcburgerjoint, or the emergency loo visit. Actually I keep the tissues you get free at the burger places, I just bung them in the glove compartment, and theres normally tissues (those small packets) in there anyway. Plus I have kitchen roll in the boot, thats handy for all sorts of things.

Can't have a conversation about water storage unless you touch on water conservation, so I guess you shouldn't have a conversation about bog roll unless you touch on bog roll conservation

I'll just leave this http://www.sheknows.com/health-and-well ... sition-yet here...

Very true :) but I hate those squatting toilets (how dirty are your trousers going to get, just for one thing  ) I'd much rather learn to squat on a low/ordinary (to us) toilet.
