ThruNite® Ti3 keyring

Post by sniper 55 »

Anybody got one of these? I've been looking for a small keyring torch for EDC and fancy the thrunite T13, they are cheap and have decent reviews.
I'm wondering are they bright enough for the normal EDC stoff or finding my way home if all else fails?

Hi there!
Yep, I've got a stainless steel Ti3 in my pocket.
It's brilliant (pun intended.) It's really well made and small enough to always be there, if you know what I mean.
The bright mode is definitely bright enough! I visited the Victoria Tunnels in Newcastle & the lamp I was given was dimmer than Joey Essex so I used my Ti instead. On full speed it was way brighter than everyone else's!
The middle mode is perfect for your average use.

Thank you, I'll bung in an order then, I've got a few quid spare this week.
Cheers mate.

Ti3 with AA battery for comparrison
tn_DSCF0486.JPG
Well the torch finally arrived yesterday (I didn't get around to ordering it till last week) and I have to say I'm very impressed.
The Ti3 has a nice quality feel to it, I don't think it's going to break easily in normal use, it's slightly thinner but a bit longer than a AA battery, and runs off a single AAA battery. It comes in a nice tin with spare O rings and a pocket clip and keychain clip.
It has 4 modes.
Firefly .4 Lm 115 hours claimed battery life. This is fine for map reading, looking at your watch etc, and in total darkness in say a cave you could probably just about see to move around if you took your time.

Low 12 Lm 6.3 hours battery life. This is plenty bright enough to move around the woods or tunnels, or to find things in the house or car etc, more than enough for all the sort of things a keyring torch or back-up torch is for, I'd have no worries going up and down Pen-y-fan at night with this.

High 120 Lm .5 hour battery life. This is way brighter than I expected, it gives a load of light, you'd be able to see no problems to find your way around at night or looks for someone, for a torch this size the amount of light is very impressive.

Strobe 120 Lm 1 hour battery life. This is the odd one out, while it's bright enough to give an enemy a bit of fright in the dark it's totally useless for any sort of self defence use as it requires 6 twists of the head to activate, so you won't be doing it in a hurry. Personally I'd rather have seen a much slower strobe, say 1 flash a second for use as a marker or signal.

The beam itself is quite wide and soft, it's not throwing a beam out a long way so don't expect to search the hillside with it, but it's great for lighting the way as it shows up the sides of the path and tunring off , and branches above you etc.

Pro's Loads of light, small, and works off easily and cheap batteries.

Con's Short battery life in high mode (think of it as boost or emergency mode really) and fitting the keychain drove me mental, the tiny split ring kept escaping (it's springy alright!)

I've got the Ti2 and love it - I actually tried to buy the Ti3 but I just clicked the cheapest option on Amazon and ended up with this instead. I stuck one of those little pocket clip things onto it and keep it in my left front pocket as much as possible. It's endlessly useful but sometimes I swap it out with my LED Lenser P3 just for a change. I found that the Ti2 is brighter and smaller. It's generally preferable but the P3 has better battery life and the brightness is actually more useable in more situations, it also has a good zoom from focussed light to flood.

While camping last week I used the P3 because I wanted the longer battery life - I may have needed to rely on it in the night see get me to the toilet (bushes) and back again.

I'm going to get the Ti3 too at some point I think, with it's changeable modes, and the very appealing firefly option, I can see it being a better all round EDC. I would like to compare battery life with the others though.

I haven't had time to test the batter life myself yet, those are the supplied figures, I'm hoping to test it over the weekend with duracell batteries and get the real figures.
I was told to put the pocket clip on the wrong way around, then you can clip it to a baseball cap peak (if you wear one) I haven't done that though, mines on my keys.
I've ordered an Olight i3e and a Trustfire mini XPG for comparrison (and a birthday present for myself) as I have a few quid spare this week.
I'll post up the reviews of those when I get them, and I'll update the runtime on this torch when I test it properly,

Those diffusers look good, I'm going to have to have a play with some foam.
I normally make a red filter for my torches, I used a strip of plastic milk carton taped into a ring around the head of the torch, thats covered with red litho tape (it's used in the printing industry, or was) it's red coloured selotape really, clear-ish but red coloured, it looks a bit crude but it keeps my night vision if I'm working at night on something.
I've just looked at the tape is still used, a google search for litho tape will bring up loads of suppliers, it could also be used for an emergency repair to a rear light I would think.

I've used red electrical tape as a filter in the past, worked fine.
