I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Wouldn't it be possible to boil it unopened covered with water? I know you can do that with condensed milk and it magically becomes a caramel sauce.

As a convert to Fray Bentos a couple of years back I've always thought it would come down to a makeshift oven which would be iffy, the pastry takes a fair bit of cooking OR take the pastry 'lid' off the top and use the meagre filling with tatties or whatever. I've got about 30 or so of them and I'm partial to one on a friday (FBF) but even in a proper oven the pastry takes a bit of cooking, the bottom of the pastry lid is often under done.
However you do it, the tin needs to be opened and I run a knife round the outside edge and then cut through the middle to make dishing it out easier. Good luck with it Jamie.

I've had them cooked over a flame in a heavy pan with the pan lid weighted down to replicate an oven as best possible. Don't remember now if there was water in the bottom to steam it, but the pastry rose massively and was actually pretty light and fluffy. Could be worth an experiment or two.
John Smith but a little bit foreign.
