It was a substitute personal weapon that had been included in the ration pack by some procurement error that was never corrected....

Hehe, good ol' Biscuit AB. They were in 24 ration packs, in a foil green wrapper. I think there were four maybe five biscuits per pack and they were about the size of a Tuc biscuit but that's where the similarity ended. They were not so much, inedible, they were indestructible. Rumour had it a pack of AB could stop a 9mm at 10 yards and still leave three biscuits intact. If you did manage to eat one, trying to pass one was an even greater challenge.

They did a variant with raisins that resembled dead flies

I believe the AB stood for Alternative to Bread. They weren't so bad if dunked and softened up in tea.

Anyway, they were in the British Army ration packs before modern MRE.

On the subject of MRE, I don't really go for off the shelf it's too pricey, I make my own kits up.

From memory I think they were only really for dunking, if you could flash up a hexi for a wet you could use the biscuit to add extra calories by dooking the 'hard tack'. Thankfully things moved on and overall the kit seems to be pretty decent, even the scran.

I liked the Dead Fly AB's when I could blag some off the CCF, kinda like a cross between Garibaldi and Hard Tack
