Ghillie Suit

Post by thebikewanderer »

I'm not sure if this has been covered before but it should be fun to show you my project as it unfolds.

First things first, here is a list of all the gear I will be using for the project; available to buy on eBay, all the items on here are the cheapest makeshift way to make the suit, I'm sure you will all appreciate crafting on the cheap.

Olive green army surplus overall.
When picking a base for the suit never pick black, try to find natural colors that don't create shadows. I found these for less than £5.

Badminton net.
Bit random I know, but this will be strong and is a very inexpensive layer to the suit, a whopping £2.56 including postage.

Jute Twine
This will make up the outer layer which will break up your silhouette, not sure how much I will need until I get started but at only £2.56 per 100m I can go pretty wild.

Clothing dye.
You will need to go out into the field in your surrounding area to see what colours you need before ordering, I suggest 2-3 different colours to dye the jute. A true ghillie suit will rely on 70% local vegetation added to the suit so just a few colours to break up the under layers is fine. Again, don't pick black.

Ghillie Suit

Looks good and I'll be following this.
What will you be using this for?
hunting or stealth movement once everything has gone to pot.
Or simply just for the fun of it?

I started making a ghillie suit some time ago, I got bored of separating all the hessian so put it aside.
My son-in-law bought one and I was actually impressed how hard it was to see him in his slightly overgrown garden.
I may revisit the project or stump up the small amount it cost to buy one.

You can buy them for around £20 on ebay, the one I saw was actually really good.

I've used a homemade ghillie cape that I made about 30 yrs ago, give a suit the elbow,(to hot), a cape is so versatile a screen a body cover a ground cover believe me they are the most functional ghillie their is. I used burlap then but I would go synthetic twine now, lighter weather resistant etc.
