potatoes- waterbuts

Post by buttystella »

took a risk planting out my earlies about three weeks ago. I saw they were through yesterday so earthed them up to protect them from frost. Today i am going to plant a row of maincrop. last year i planted them much later and missed the last frosts but others who didnt reported lower yields after frost damage. DO any preppers know the ratio of yield to frost damage, i know it may be hard to quantify.

Got three water buts set up to take rain water from my shed roof but need more, water is so easily used-up.
i find its a good idea to keep lids on the buts to stop birds drowning. Two of the wbuts are of a white colour so i am hoping this may reduce evaporation.

Don't know but think it's safer to leave it longer just in case. My neighbour who's over 80 told me yesterday not to plant any tatties at all until the end of April.

My gardening guru said Good Friday - but Easter is well late this year. I've thrown caution to the wind and lobbed a few new potatoes in pots...fingers crossed, eh?

tatties have been in for for nearly a week now with no ill effects of the Cornish climate! Onions and shallots are in and coming on nicely, next door has been dropping off armfuls of turnip, leek and beetroot still...... really need to start getting more crop on the go next couple of years. Tomatoes seem ok, not sure about the grapes this year. Last year they were slightly too bitter for my liking!!

My spuds went in yesterday. Also dug up the strawberry runners and put them in a bed, and sowed broad beans, salad leaves and radish. Shallots and garlic went in about a three weeks ago and are starting to poke through now.

Tomatoes, peppers, courgettes and summer squash are all pricked out and on the window ledges in the house until they get a bit bigger.

Next up is to sow some aubergines, pumpkins and cucumbers. I am going to make a mini greenhouse out of an old tent frame, some plastic sheeting and tarp clips and keep my fingers crossed!

Is it too late to sow purple sprouting brocolli? Must look that up tomorrow. Am off to bed now.

Oh yes - also have some scarlet KALE to sow .... (runs away before lil throws her old wellies at me ...)
