beans .

Post by unsure »

ive just checked a few cans i forgot about , the tops are swollen a little so they are for the bin .
what are the beans in a tin of beans . i`m thinking of just storing the beans and vaccing them down rather than in tins .
the tins were not damaged or rusty in any way , so i`m thinking the contents have just gone bad .

Usually haricot beans in commercial baked beans, I like pinto beans when I make baked beans but you can use pretty much any of them.

If you have any sort of Asian community near you, try where they shop.I am near Leicester and we buy rice, spices beans etc in bulk and cheap!

Some of the supermarkets 'world food aisles' can be really good too, especially the bigger stores. Even herbs and rice etc, you'll pay one price in the 'normal' herbs and spices section and a lot less in the world food aisle. There's all sorts of loveliness in the world food aisle. :D

Why are beans stored for prepping (sorry, I'm new)? They and other vegetables have negligible calories. Isn't it better to store something with high calories like tinned curry / meat / fish?

It depends how long you plan on using your preps for but theres a lot to be said for a balanced diet. They're healthy and cheap and keep for years. If you're thinking bug out then you're probably better with the high cal/carb stuff but for an extended period beans are a healthy but boring alternative to meat. Veggies get by on them fine.
