Complete noob

Post by connieboy »

Hi all, as the title suggests, in a complete noob, no equipment and no clue... Lol
Seriously though, after watching quite a few videos about wild camping which I'm really interested in starting to do, I started coming across prepping videos, at first I thought "oh please really, it won't get that bad"... I've now got to the point of thinking well maybe a bug out bag in the car is not a bad idea, it's a start right?... I mean I don't know Jack about survival or anything else, that's why I'm here
So I hope I can learn a few things off you guys and girls so I don't
end up clutching a bag of equipment while the SHTF not knowing how to use the equipment and survive using my surroundings.
Looking forward to talking to you all And learning some vital skills
Thanks
Conrad

Welcome mate, to the forum and to prepping. I hope you find plenty good stuff on here, its been a source of inspiration for me. Enjoy the prepping experience, the best advice I can give you as a self confessed noob is to figure out what your personal prepping priorities are, a lot of us have tried to cover all the bases at the same time and you end up buying cheap (and buying twice). Chill, see what works for you and work towards it. The basics remain the same, water shelter and food (and the ability to cook/heat it). I'd start with getting a supply of the basics in and then take your own direction, whatever it is you feel is the most likely to affect you. Any questions, ask away, there's bound to be someone who has experience of it.

Thanks Deeps
I was thinking about my post and maybe I should just worry about a get home bag for now, not worth me worrying about WTSHTF.
I wouldn't be able to cope, so small steps I think, as I get more knowledge I could possibly expand my get home bag to last longer,

First start with the simple things...

If your out in the car .

Do you have as / RAC cover?

Does the car have a spare wheel? Can you change it yourself?

Can you cope with a break down?

At home you go home and have no electric. .. Can you cope?

Same but no gas?

And again no mains water....

Little steps prepare you some what for bigger issues

Don't go out buying crap you don't need / spending money you don't have on a pipe dream...

Start with a list...

Eg

No electric:

Torches
Lantern
Way to cook
Way to heat the house
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine

Hi connieboy, just beware of those american prepper videos where they have lots of fancy kit but have never actually used any of it.

GHB is sensible place to start (fairly high probability), along with sorting yourself out should the water supply fail (extremely high risk).

Thanks, very good point Yorkshire Andy I'll do a checklist list of things I have in the house that would be of use.

I wouldn't worry about a bug out bag..

But would look into a "hotel bag"

Most local emergency situations eg flooding you will find yourself in a "rest centre" eg local ish. Sports hall or community hall..... With camp beds put up with blankets...

Few skivvy rolls (google it) but basically socks , underwear, t shirt

Change of trousers , warm jumper shoes

Wash bag

Personal medication

Few books and a pack of cards

Phone charger

Bit of cash

Sweets

Copy's of home insurance / car insurance documents

Hip flask of yiur favourite tipple

All in a rucksack/ suitcase ready to go

Chances are you already have all the above at home so total cost £0 but the ability to grab bag and leave when the police knock on your door at 3am is priceless
