In with the basic gardening tools, I'd suggest a Mattock, Mine dosent get used as much as the garden spade or fork but when it does get used its worth every penny of the 20 quid I paid for it.
Also a good sharpeing stone to keep tools in tip top condition.

I'd add a good long handled slasher to go with that. I cleared the top half of my old allotment of brambles with a slasher and mattock.
