So not sure how to proceed, but pretty worried about the new political alignments across the West. Am I alone in thinking this?

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Take care of the little things that you can affect, leave the bigger stuff alone. :D
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Morning :) I agree with the others, unless you're filthy rich you have to start small, ask yourself if it gets inhospitable outside your door, how long can you feed one end and wipe the other? That may sound crude but assuming you are housed, the basics of life and keeping it going involve full cupboards, how about power failure, could you cope?

I don't think anyone would say the next few years are going to be plain sailing anywhere in the world, we don't discuss political matters too much here, and yet we have to consider the potential consequences, but if you're just beginning then you have to look at what you have and how much more you need, chances are food in the cupboard is a better investment than money in the bank right now, granted if you have to leave there'll be too much to take with you, prepping is like insurance, but it's also a gamble, I look at it like this or that might happen and have prepared for some scenarios because our resources are limited ( aren't everybody's?) yes small steps ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Whatever you're preparing for, you cannot go wrong with storing food, water, light sources, a stove, backup power supplies and something to keep you warm with.
