Why raise it? Started mine at ground level I used a old rabbit run not grass...
Find a good weed killer (not path clear) and spray the grass off eg
Glyphosate
Once dead dig if over well add some compost and a few slack handfuls of fish blood and bone meal.. Rake over and cover with polythene for a week or so (helps warm the soil)
Why the weed killer? The rest I'm fine with but really can't see the logic of dousing an area to be used for food crops with poisons . I know it does break down at least to an extent but there are residual levels left and some evidence to show glyphosate is making it's way into the food chain already. I'd personally prefer not to use it , plus I don't like the thought of my money going towards the likes of Monsanto, evil corporation.
I did turn a lawn into a veg plot and simply cut the turf off and put it in a dark compost bin and left it alone apart from tipping the wee bottle onto it each day or so and it turned into lovely dark compost.

Lay down a thick layer of Newspaper, thats what Granddad used to do.
Kills most plants and rots down.
Just build your bed directly over the top

I experimented with making high calory survival flapjack with a kilo of oats, half a jar of honey, about 300g of sugar and various nuts and dried fruit. And peanut butter.
The last may, in hindsight, not have been the best idea as they eat much like MDF. But they would keep you alive, just a bit sorry that they had.
Yes covering the soil like that does work. It's also possible to use black polythene as a short term method of reducing weed growth and it also helps to warm the soil. I can also recall someone suggesting that carpet can be used too and it can although it comes with a "but". Firstly some carpets are made with a lot of inorganic materials , nylons , glues and dyes and also they become very heavy when wet and dirty. I was asked to do a garden tidy last year and it hadn't been touched for a few years. It was covered in carpet which had started to fall apart but not enough to just pull it up easily and grass and weeds had started to grow through it. Absolute pain to do anything with.
Carpet..... I had to deal with someone elses' bright idea of laying carpet at my old allotment. Took me weeks to shift it, and it cost me to get rid of it. Grass grew through it, it was a slug magnet and it left nasty bits all over the soil.

That'd be Bob Flowerdew of Gardeners Question time to blame- he used to bang on about carpet all the time. I dont think he lives in the same world as most of us who have to transport, dispose and pay for waste handling.

Thanks for putting forward that name , I couldn't for the life of me remember who had suggested it although I'm sure others have parroted him . Either way bloody daft idea.
