Personally I have eaten a lot of long dated food courtesy of HMG, the oldest, I think, was some bully beef that had gone out with Op. Torch, the relief invasion of north africa and was dated as being packed in 1942. It would have been about 1978/9 when I and many others ate it. But I wouldnt advise anyone else to do the same.
Eating out of date food.

Re: Eating out of date food.
Its easy. USE BY: Just that.It will apply to high risk foods( pre. cooked and refrigerated). If you eat it out of date, that's your look out.BEST BEFORE: Just that.Nutritionally and visually at its best before that date.
I ate a can of chicken soup a year off code yesterday. The can was fine,so were the contents.
Oh yes; there's no such thing as a SELL BY date before anyone says it!

On a slightly not so good note I was working through a pack of UHT milk that was still in date by a week and 3 out of 6 cartons were lumpy when poured into coffee and tasted off. Not had that with UHT before it's been ok a couple of months past date.
If guns are outlawed then only the outlaws will have guns....
Re: Eating out of date food.
Always used to say that UHT stood for ultra horrible taste.
We rotate food stocks as everyone does but sometimes the odd thing slips through. Recently my wife pulled out a box of maltessers which she then took with us when we went for dinner at her sister's . Opened them up and popped a few in and , well , they weren't crunchy more like a soft toffee or caramel . Dated 2013 . I still ate them though as apart from being soft they were ok but I perhaps can see why her sister says my wife is stingy .

Re: Eating out of date food.
Last week I uncovered 2 packets of chocolate flavoured angel delight best before sometime in 2013.
I gave them a whirl, and whilst they were edible and tasted of chocolate, they didnt mix well and had the consistency of half congealed vomit.
Took me two days, but I scoffed the lot.
No side effects other than my wife now doubting my sanity even further.
