Hello from Berlin

Post by miguelb »

Dear community,

I am Miguel, 33, photography student from Berlin, Germany. I came upon this forum while I was searching for people in the UK that prepare for crisis situations. It's a topic I deal with since a few months.
The reason why I am interested in prepping is the current political situation in Europe. I want to examine how people in Germany, in the UK and other European countries are dealing with it.
So, I am posting here because I am searching for contacts to preppers who would be willing to be photographed by me.
I know and understand the concerns that come with this. I have to say: I am NOT a journalist, I am a photographer who wants to create an art project that will maybe be shown in an exhibition in Berlin. Also, the pictures could be made without showing the face and without showing the localities. It could be totally anonymous. Furthermore, I would show you the pictures right after taking it and we will decide together what pictures could be shown to a wider public.

If there is anyone who would be willing to meet me, I would be happy if you contact me in this forum or via a private message.

If you want to see some of my work I did before, here is my website:

Thank you for your time and have a good day!

Hi, nice to hear from Germany. I do not know if the moderators of this forum will allow you to make this approach, as (I think) the terms and conditions of membership forbid this (though I may be wrong!). However, they are reasonable people, so may be open to conversation with you about the matter.

Do you have a personal interest in prepping? Or is this a non-personal issue to you? It would be interesting to hear about the perspectives from a non-english speaking country. Congratulations on your english, it is far better than my german language skills. Or lack of ! ;)

Hi shocker,

thank you for the compliments on my english, I try my best! ;)

To answer your question: I am not personally doing any preparations for crisis situations. But I am more and more worried about the political developments, not only in Europe, but also in the USA and countries in the east.
For example, the vote for a Brexit may have good reasons for the majority of the people living in the UK, but it worries me, because I have the feeling that Europe is kind of falling apart and we are throwing away the good advances that Europe has made in the years since World War II. The EU is not a perfect structure (pardon my lack of words) and there are other ways to collaborate, but I am worried about the mindset behind the vote for leaving the EU.
Also, if I see what is going on in the US, with a "president" that - to be honest - appears mentally insane to me, I am worried that an economis crisis or a war is much more likely to happen than it was in the years before him.
There are more examples, but too many to state here. What interests me is how the ordinary people deal with this situations. What are their fears and opinions on that and especially, what efforts do they make to protect themselves and their family?

Please be careful when posting about politics.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Hello and welcome to our forum.

I appreciate the difficulties in obtaining subjects for your study, and I'm not sure how much interest you will get from our site, but thank you for being upfront about your intentions.

Good luck with your project. :)

Well, Miguel, it sounds as though you are mentally preparing, so maybe you are a prepper already and just didnt know it !

Prepping, as I have come to realise since joining the forum recently, is not just for crisis situations. As other, long time members have pointed out, it is often as simple as knowing that you have enough toilet paper in the house. :D

Many people here are more focused on "being prepared" for whatever life throws at you than the (more U.S style) survivalist, end of the world scenarios. Most of the people I have encountered on this forum are just straightforward people getting on with life as normally as possible. Quite different from most of the other webpages and forums out there.

It would be a good idea for you to read some of the threads on here, using the search function, to get a feel of the style of this forum, as it is quite different to other prepper sites. Much more down to earth, realistic and friendly too. With very little political comment as this tends to cause upset.

Have look around at active threads using the "V" arrow button to the right of the log in for a selection of what people are talking about recently. I am glad the moderators have allowed you to continue- you can recognise them as their names appear in green letters. It is a good idea to pay attention to what they say: if they give a warning, take notice !

However, please enjoy it here, I certainly do, very much. There are good people here and no political extremists or bullys. :D

Thanks a lot for your replies and the advice, guys!

I don't want to upset anyone with my words concerning the political situation. I just wanted to lay my cards on the table and be honest about my point of view and intentions.

I am sure that this forum is not made up of extremists as I can see in other threads that the members are very cautious with political comment. I can tell you that I also tried to contact preppers in German forums and what I saw there was the same: People like you and me living a normal life, just trying to be prepared for whatever - like having enough toilet paper in the house ;). But I had a lot of problems meeting people because of questionable reports on the prepping community in German media. Preppers were labeled as conspiracists or right-wing extremists.

What I would like to ask you is, do you think of prepping as a "scene", as a way of living or is it more a particular mindset?
Also, what are the scenarios you are preparing for?

I will sure have a look at other threads in this forum to find some answers, but I would be happy if someone is willing to reply directly :)

Now you have joined and very honestly laid your cards on the table, why not start your own thread in a suitable section, maybe "general chat" ? It might be an idea to repeat some of your introduction so people understand what you are trying to do.

You need to have over five numbered posts before you can use the Personal Message system. You may find that people feel more comfortable conversing there, so its worth your time.

Of course, I am just a (very junior!) member here so I cannot give you permission to do anything or not. However, not everyone reads the new member section so a broader approach may bring more responses. I hope so, good luck mate - we will talk more on the forum I am sure. ;)
