While the wife is away, I'm slowly building up food stocks. 8-) Mainly tinned meats and veggies, and now rice and pasta. If I can maintain that stock and build on it, we should have a handy food store.

Meat/chicken tins are currently about 2 weeks for 1 person, ditto rice and pasta. So we need to build on it, but it's a start.

Strangely, a lot of the tins, rice and pasta was actually her suggestion! I'm only too happy to comply...

Potted 120 sunflower seeds in propagators today at my workplace.....the deal is....tenants + their kids sponsor a sunflower at £1 a time....the one who grows the tallest sunflower gets a box of chocs....I use any profits to fund our food growing project....and I get all the sunflower seeds! :D

What will you do with 000s of sunflower seeds? Dry them and eat them?

Gave the genny a run up today and then refilled the tank with fuel mixed with some Sta-Bil I picked up last week so hopefully that will prevent any problems with varnishing etc in the carb for around 18 months. After 12 months or so I will drain it and put the fuel in the motorbike. Also sorted out some old pop bottles to fill with water and stick in the veg containers for when we are away next week, will drop the seedlings that are still in trays round to the neighbour to look after.

Just as a side note, i have been watering the veg using water from 2 x 200L butts for the last 2 weeks. We've had hardly any rain over the last 2 weeks and now one butt is empty and the other is only 2/3 full. It's amazing how much you use just for a little veg plot like mine, worth bearing in mind if things ever went totally belly up. We have a river very near us so it wouldn't be a major problem for us but if you dont have access to a river/well etc it would be a really good idea to think of alternative arrangements. Another week and a half with no rain and both my butts would be empty just looking after the veg.
