Hello Gary

I see you are a specialist in marketing with a particular interest in music consumption.

Can you tell us a bit more about your research area please? Is the research part of a wider collaboration or project? What particular research question are you focussing on? What other areas of risk perception or preparation are you looking at?

Hi Feathers,

Yes I am a lecturer in the school of business. My teaching and research interests are mostly focused around consumer behaviour which is basically the study of human behaviour. Most of my research is about music, technology and ethical consumption. Although I work in a business school, the emphasis in my research is about social implications such as how music can be used to help mental and physical health, education etc. A lot of it is quite theoretical and boring. I tend to be quite critical about the music industry and like my research to be used ethically so don't consult with commercial partners directly.

This research is broadly about looking at how we manage risk and anxiety around potential unwanted events in different ways. Generally humans are bad at planning for the future, particulalrly if it is planning for potential disaster. The idea is to talk to communities of people that are at the higher end of rationality regarding prepearation for such events and see what we can learn. We are at the exploration stage of our study so like previous projects I have done the focus is likely to shift slightly depending on the data we collect. At the moment I suppose we are interested in particular about how technological change impacts upon experiences of risk management.

To me everyone is a preper in their own way, have you seen how much kit parents with young children load into the car for a trip out, in industry we do risk assessments and we all know, from a very young age, how to dial 999. It's not complicated, we're just a bit more methodical.

Ha very true. Everyone clearly prepares in different ways, why do you think there is a stigma about being more 'methodical' about it. This is the part I don't understand.

Then you need to look into industry H&S risk assessments. Why is the H&S guy always hated? Having been the H&S rep I can give you lots of reasons and boy do I have some stories about that.

As for any prepping. No one wants to do extra work when they get home, they know a torch will be handy if the power goes out but they will rather sit in front of the TV and unwind rather than stop off on the way home and get some spare batteries. If a breaker pops then they blame the electric companies, the torch, the fuse box, the batteries, that low beam in the fuse cupboard, anything other than themselves while they are bumping around in the dark. You can imagine the reaction you would get, as a prepper, telling them, at this point, that they should have had some spare batteries for the torch and a first aid kit for that nasty head wound.

People don't like change or extra work even if it is for their own good, it's easier to po-po the ideas and believe that the zombie apocalypse will never happen.

If you're betting man I'm happy to wager that we'll not have a zombie apocalypse. Ever. Now aliens..... absolute stinkers and for some reason all aliens have designs on human woman (the TV can't be wrong), they're the buggers to watch for.
