Well, the only fruit I grow here is blackcurrants and brambles, both get frozen or made into jams (in which case the sugar preserve them nicely) but I`m looking at alternative ways of storing fruit this year so I don`t have to rely on electricity.
If I can buy, this autumn, very cheaply, a bulk of apples, then I`ll be trying storing them the old fashioned way, in boxes of sand and wrapped in newspaper in our cool, dry pantry. I`ll then see which works best. :) I have dried apple rings though in an oven on the lowest setting but again, that uses precious electricity (am on a prepaid meter) so not too keen this year even though they tasted lovely and kept very well indeed.

I too would be interested in storing without usng elec.

I guess the american way of 'canning' might be a good alternative.

So far I've only tried jam making (making some rhubarb jam tomorrow morning) (and baking fresh bread) (elevenses at my house anyone?) :)
A friend stews apples and freezes portions in freezer bags until needed for jams. pies etc.
A quick google brought up this page: http://www.helpwithcooking.com/food-sto ... fruit.html

cheers guys, was looking to add some fruit to a long term storage plan, was gonna buy a dehydrator but now funds are running low and also cant be bothered with the whole drying fruit thing, looked into buying dehydrated or freeze dried fruit, v few suppliers in uk for small orders it seems , so I might just throw some dried fruit into mylar bags and hope they last ok...
