I did mixed martial arts at school with a Geordie instructor with a wicked sense of humour. One evening one of the team No names ( Hi Kieth B ) said to the instructor Paddy. " Sir if you were attacked by two big men armed with two knives each what would you do?" "BLEED PROFUSELY" was the stoic reply

The best advice I was given was things like " Never start a fight, but always finish so there is NEVER a round 2" "if trouble is unavoidable then hit em as hard as you can with what ever you can find, preferably from behind then run like hell" but my favourite was
"As a prepper not a soldier you dont have an army to back you up, so if you cannot win instantly and overwhelmingly then give ground, run away and live to fight another day. You have family to care for"

I also use a cane in winter, mine was made by Cold Steel.

Ages ago some living history types who did middle ages ( or dark ages) stuff were at an event where i was helping my mate show off his old military vehicles, They taught me how to use a 1/4 staff VERY basically which got me thinking when I got home. So not wanting to walk around like Little john I bought a titanium telescopic hiking pole very a very hard pointy nylon tip. Perfectly legal and over a meter long closed they make a great SD tool. it fastens to my EDC back pack with Velcro and is easily deploys. Naturally when I have to visit dreadfully dangerous unsafe places like London I suddenly develop Gout and need to use the pole so its in my hand.

I have one with my car GHB,in case I have to walk home.As you say ,perfectly legal.

For the photographers among us theres some really superb and solid monopods about. For my photography I favor the Manfrotto (cant remember the model) it's a tad heavy but plenty solid enough to double as a stout walking stick, very handy for crossing rough ground as a third leg.
I've got one made by Benbo a good few years ago, solid doesn't come close, it's built like a tank and length wise it would give a quaterstaff a run for it's money. Only drawback it's heavy, and it's long closed, too long to carry around easily. Bung a gopro on top and job done.
