I do really wonder sometimes if there are two different species of human on this planet, normal ones and "KFC-Man"...... The sooner everyone realises that they don't have a right to light and heat at the flick of a switch, food for the asking and a tap full of clean water (after all there are loads of people who have none of these things) the better.

And Breathe!!

Politics aside, Jack's list is pretty good.

I'm sure leaving the EU will not be as bad as some people are predicting. Mind you, its not going to be as good as others say either.

This week we've been mostly fixing roofs. The 2 cracked tiles on the house turned out to be 9 plus the full ridge was loose. So that's all fixed before the winter storms.
The garage has sprung a leak the shed roof was redone over the summer but the garage had looked ok, obviously not. It's been patched and on next summer's to do list.

Ordered a new seal kit for the primus stove and a few more canisters for the suitcase stoves.

Need to buy some more bottles of water as it's one area we are lacking if we loose mains water.

Have you thought about refilling pop bottles? Or don't you drink the stuff in your house ?
Clean the bottle, run the tap until you can smell chlorine, fill, cap and keep the dark...... Free prep.

2 more tea light lanterns...
One of the safer ways to burn them 2 for £5 in lidl

I go for silver as the internals reflect more light

Think I've got 10 or so of them now :/

It's been a while since I posted. I was in London getting twitchy about zombies. Two or three things coincided and I took the plunge and got out of Dodge. There were a few unexpected surprises, going from savings to rent arrears in three months. Not good, though long-term it's worked out. Took a surprisingly long time to get through some of my food. I think I still have a can or two at the back of the cupboard. Have started again though.

One of the first things I was told after moving was to stock up on candles as there will be winter power cuts. That was already covered of course. Last winter the power was fine, though the beast from the east meant no deliveries got through for around a week. I was fascinated walking through the supermarket seeing four boxes of potatos spread out to look like there was stuff, and people just casually walking up and down. No panic.

Staying warm will be a different issue. I'm sceptical about the tea-lights in a plant pot heaters, but I'll give them a go. And there's a plan B for that too.

I have managed to get some First Aid training. Highlights how much we still rely on hospitals etc. for health, but a good start, and like so many things something is better than nothing.

Now things are a bit more settled at home, and with Br*x!t looming I have started buying extra food, a few tins here, an extra shop or two when I don't actually need anything. My food first time round clearly had a lot of room for improvement and needs reassessing, but no solid plan yet.

Some solid Preps there, actually being put into practice.

Hi Jan, having 'been through it', you'll have a better idea of what worked and didn't work for YOU. As the saying goes, "you can't teach experience". What would you do differently ???

Definitely learning from experience. I think the lesson is to be brutally honest about what I eat. Less of what I "should" eat, and more sweet treats. Problem is keeping them around long enough to need them.

There's a reason my missus doesn't have emergency Mars bars and stuff in her car bag, lets just say her idea of an emergency is different to mine. ;)

I guess its a balancing act on that front. Short term then it doesn't matter what you eat, calories are king but longer term then the balanced diet approach would be better, even if its not a perfect diet. I keep bags of cheap sweets in my preps, some a fair bit out of date (but still edible, at least so far) and they're 'out of sight, out of mind' but I don't have much of a sweet tooth. If I do open a bag, I'll trough it in minutes though so I get where you're coming from.

Are you much of a cook normally ? Both me and the missus are happy to cook so for us storing ingredients isn't a big deal. I've been known to cheat and use a tin of cheap chicken in white sauce and 'sex it up', you can get surprisingly good meals with a bit of playing around with prep meals.

Sometimes. Part of my struggle is I eat a lot of fresh, and don't often know what's for dinner until I'm hungry. "Prep what you eat" is all very well, but I'd need a market garden, and space for a greenhouse. Right now I'm going the way of ready-made tinned meals. A lesson I learned was to buy one and try it before deciding to stock up. Then buying five or twenty-five might need another practical trial.

btw, anyone know where I can get 24 cases of long-life crisps? :D
