Can I ask which organic compost you used?- I started my veg on Miracle Grow organic compost and the sweet peppers took for...........................ever to germinate much much longer than normal nearly 2 months! and then on top that the soil started to grow moss on the top which has never ever happened to me in the years of growing veg with normal compost - so transplanted everything into larger pots with normal compost and everything started to grow fine and everything is ok now - but would be interested to know if you have had any problems like that???? (bearing in mind you may have used a different organic compost than me)
Re carrots, its carrot fly and soil type I think. I have tried 3 years running & failed, spoke to my neighbours and they said "oh you cant grow carrots here", most of them are retired farm workers and old, so I thought they should know. They cheap to buy anyway so its not a hassle.
I agree Itsy re the cost of getting fancy with veg... you can end up with 6 tomatoes that cost £1.97 each or summat !
I was supposed to be sowing kale (waves at Lil, ) this weekend past but even now it`s still too windy here to work in the garden!
So will be indoors and taking stock of the pantry etc.

Funny you mention that, because some of my seeds took way longer to germinate than others - I do have two or three pots of 'normal' compost but I can't remember which ones they are so it may be that the stuff in normal compost started off much quicker than the organic ones. And I also got moss on a couple of tubs! I need to get some more so I may just go for bog standard compost rather than high falutin' organic stuff
just had a couple of hours in the garden! planted out 5 sweet corn plants and 9 tomato plants! put canes in for my peas! planted more pea seeds for a later crop!
bought 9 12V 1.5AH drill batteries from B&Q for £1 each so im stripping them down for a project!
Well, dropped my laptop last night on the road. Screen smashed and it's out of action for the forseeable (am on OHs at the mo). Time to get hard copies of my info and relevant posts asap!

Oh dear........ that's not good , yes they are cheap - however I like the idea of growing what I can so I can have idea if TSHTF, I have an idea how quickly things turn around a yield. To be honest I get really good yields from tomato plants - planted 2 last year, they grew 5.5 feet tall and each produced 100 toms each - we eat tons of salad so we saved a fortune in buying toms - especially the cheapest they ever are in my town is 5 for £1 and we usually go through 3-4 every sitting plus we always seem to be entertaining family so very money saving for us.
