bioethanol fireplace

Got this project underway. Chimney has been capped so a open fire was a none starter without scaffolding. So for now.. I've gone bio ethanol

I removed the free standing electric fireplace and removed the wall paper and hardboard (yes hardboard sheet revealing the old fireplace,

Nice lintle above so.. 2*2 battern round the chimney hole and plasterboard sheet followed by dry lining the opening

Then built a plasterboard ledge plastered the underside before fitting in place adding a metal bowl under the burner as a fail safe containment for the bioethanol should the burner leak then plastered the lot allowed to dry

Tiled the ledge and back just need to paint the sides.. metal deflector plate above to protect the top lining (Morrisons baking sheet) after an hour's burn it only got to 80°c with my thermo gun). Behind the decorative log slivers there is a 15mm hole so incase of a leak and fire I can get a extinguisher jet into the base to snuff out any problem

No totally flu less that said there's the legecy vent from the old back boiler in the living room plus trickle vents in the windows so its not sealed

Seen a few guides saying not to use plasterboard not a clue why as I've been involved in fire testing the stuff and once skimmed no way will it burn had a BIG propane burner heating a sandwich of 12mm gyproc PIR insulation and another 12mm after an hour it the intense flame hadn't penetrated the first layer of board fully

Well had the fire box get very lively last night..

Mrs a was probably rightly concerned.....

I was happy the flames were contained as no flames below but a orange glow...

Wouldn't extinguish with the shutter so I let it burn itself out .

The fire / vapour / air was escaping round / getting in from the gap between the top plate and the fuel tank as I hadn't realised it was spot welded guessing the heat had opened the gap and allowed it to flare up..

Amazon won't take it back so I've used exhaust repair putty to seal the gap up its designed to withstand 1000°C and pressure found in exhaust systems including manifolds so far so good

I use exhaust putty on the wood stove How do you find the heat output of your fire Andy?

Very good I'd say it's comparable with a 2kw fan heater if not 3kw probably not the cheapest thing to run but Mrs a gets the fuel with 20% off at work..

Put it in as a emergency heater as in power cut more than anything, we have the living room stripped at the moment decorating had the radiator off yesterday to strip the wall paper and somewhere safe ish to burn candles

That’s worth knowing, thanks. I had the same problem with rot in my front room some time ago. Got a concrete firm in and filled it in. Quickest and cheapest solution.
