I bought a cheap survival kit years ago. Amongst the contents were some fishing line and hooks. I went down the seaside, put my sony walkman on, sat on a groyne in the sunshine and tried to catch a fish.
After listening to Led Zeppelin 1 & 2 I went home, fishless.

I realised then that a contingency kit needed to contain stuff that I was likely to need and that I knew how to use; a button compass is no use at all if you cannot read a map. An arrowhead is just some pointy metal if you cannot make/use a bow (or spear).

I would echo others, the best bet is to think about what you might need to do and equip it with the supplies/tools to acheive that.

Ha ha  being food, we have blue plasters in the kits. They are crap, so we use standard Elastoplast and cover with blue insulation tape.

We kept getting plasters pilfered... Replaced with blue detectable ones problem solved...

First aid kits at work are now sealed with fire extinguisher ties... No one touches them now unless they actually need first aid and it makes monthly contents checks much quicker .

Yup, handy stuff, and always carried. Keep a metre or two (not measured) in my wallet.

Why buy it when you can liberate it from work.......

We caught someone a few years at clocking off with a bag of loo rolls from the cleaning cupboard...

Either times are hard or it's grab what you can

Not pilfering but i had a number of first aid kits from work. They have to be periodically changed and the firm i worked for would skip the old ones . They weren't normally complete but there was enough to cobble together a full one out of a few and besides the green boxes would sell on ebay even empty if i didn't fill them full of tools or nails. I certainly had an awful lot of triangular bandages , most of which got used for rags.
We also used to have the porta loos , or the turdis as they were commonly called . I soon twigged that when it came to cleaning time they rep!aced all the rolls and any that were opened were just chucked. So picked them up just before cleaning. Not pilfering in my eyes , just saving something from being wasted.

I've done the same with out of date first aid supplies to the point I'd accumulated that much on chuck out day I donated a full bag for life to the local army cadet drill hall for their first aid training, the staff sargent was very happy and thankful

A very under appreciated item, can be used for tying up stuff like emergency splints as well as folding over to absorb if needed. I like to keep a couple in my FAK's. Saying that, so far its purely theory, I've never had to use them in anger yet, hope it continues that way.
