Hey everyone I'm new here have been following recent events closely since the end of last year, and have been preparing what I can on a small budget, we are a family of 5 and I'm thinking maybe another like minded family on here has thought about starting some kind of commune or off grid settlement as we are really interested in finding land to live and grow on off grid and this would be lots easier I think with more people hands on!

Welcome, I am a mum of 5 kids, so 7 in my house, and yes I have thought for many years of commune living, however the older I have got the more I understand my ability to fall out with people! Unfortunatly the dream of happy living would be filled with disagreements so I have desided to be content with my 4 walls with a strong front door to block other humans. I shall be friendly online or on special occations.

I have had friends move to a commune, they love it.

Welcome to the forum - great that you were starting to take note so early on. As for communal living - well, now's not the time of course, but also now *is* the time for regular contributions online, so people to get to know you, and *you* get to know people. Personally, I think like-minded neighbours are great, but I like my own space. And with such an individual thing as prepping, that can often be the best compromise.

You can do a lot towards it without others even knowing - I have a very helpful neighbour, really sweet guy; he's not a prepper, doesn't grow his own food except tomatoes, nothing. But he's a radio ham, very experienced, and he would certainly help with communications in times of need. Job done, I thought - but actually, the language and knowledge and issues of radio comms are so far beyond me, I'm taking an online radio course from Essex Hams, to get a basic knowledge of it all. Using this time to move things forward (exactly as you have done in joining the forum!) is a good thing.

Welcome to the forum. If commune living is for you, good luck. Personally I like my own space but can see the appeal too. Certainly a large garden or a piece of land makes prepping and self-sufficency more obtainable but there are plenty of other ways to reach your goals in the meantime, keep reading the posts and ask for help/advice, you'll find plenty willing to help.

He could supervise you at higher power levels, help fix any radio problems you had and offer advice as to setting things up. Only downside is antennas like being spaced out a bit. If they are too close the only thing you would hear on the radio would be your neighbour transmitting lol.

He's over the road, not next door, but his antenna is **really** big - fifty feet?

I'm quite wary of any closer contact, to be honest. I stepped back quite forcefully a few years ago, I don't want to "step forward" again, or have him think I'm inviting myself into his space. He's also a kind of hub in the neighbourhood - he does enough for people as it is, and he chats about people to me, so he might chat to others about me. And I don't trust the neighbourhood, frankly - its safe, but when there *is* crime, its serious crime. In any case, it isn't a hobby for me for the near future - I want the basic skills, and I'm fascinated by the science of it, but I don't really want to go a great deal further than that, not right now, anyway .

Also as you progress, you start building skills such as soldering or electrics, so putting in solar systems or rebuilding broken appliences becomes so easy.
