Self protection

Post by LuqmanNaq »

Hey guys,

I personally believe that we are heading for a global economic collapse. And as the economy worsens crime will increase. Ferfal who lives in post collapse Argentina quoted a newspaper in 2009 that stated; 9 out of 10 people have been a direct victim or has a direct family member who has been a victim of violent crime.

So personally I think it's important for preppers (and anyone) to develop self protection skills, and to create a secure home.

Personally I have a lack of funds and injury issues so my physical training consists of hitting my BOB dummy in my garage. So I personally train my awareness and social skills, so I can avoid and prevent trouble.

After a break in while we slept 3 months ago and an attempted break in to my garage (my house is on the corner of our street), we got an intruder light fitted, magnetic door alarms, 5 extra locks (including an internal door), and I plan to get more done in the future.

I also have a rounders bat, and 2 stanley knife next to my bed. As the economy worsens I'll keep more weapons in strategic parts of my home.

I don't think crime is rampant now in the UK, but I'm simply developing the habit of self-protection for the future.

Here's a video I made on how to train your situational awareness...

Here's a great series of videos on securing your home from ferfal who lives in post collapse argentina...

How are you training your self protection skills, and securing your home?

Good post.
Home protection is one that I am constantly thinking about. Our front door is rubbbish and could easily be kicked in. However, living in rented means we can do very little.
Window locks, security lights can be done. We will look at improving the doors as best we can.

It’s always worth remembering that humans are like any other predator.
And like wild animals hunters will tend to pick pray that they are able to kill will least danger to self and with least energy used. so they will look for those that are trapped, weak or isolated (easy target)
So the best defence is to understand the predator and the risks and then don’t put yourself in a position of pray

It's worth remembering that you are less likely to be the victim of a crime today than you were 10 years ago as crime has fallen year on year throughout this time. And for that matter if your on the other side of the fence you now have about a 1 in 3 chance of gettinmg caught. Which frighteningly is much better than the 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 of ten years ago.
That said I remember driving through a district of Miami a few years back and didin't see a single window that wasn't covered in bars. If there is a collapse then it may be prudent to head the same way, so long as there are enough escape routes in case of a fire.

This is an interesting article regarding the police and fire service. OK, amercian again but substitute the american references and put in an english location.

What would happen if tshtf? They would be a t home with their own families.

I've heard that before but (I have no sources to back up my opinion) I think the numbers are doctored crimes to sound less serious, and the police and courts simply aren't that strict at enforcing the law.

I've been living in the area for the past 15 years and it has gotten a lot worse, we now have a gang problem which didn't used to exist.... but that is of course one area. And I believe that people living in major cities would disagree with the statistics too.

Thanks for the compliment preppingsu. My door can be easily kicked in too, when I get the funds I'm gonna invest in something more sturdy... but we are think of moving because we already have a gang problem here (they aren't normally violent; mainly home and car theft, and annexing the local park) and things will get worse as the economy gets worse.

I agree, training your awareness skills are number one priority. But even monkey's fall out of trees, and simply based on the sheer level of violent criminality post collapse you and/or your loved one's are almost certainly going to become a victim... so I think some form of physical protection is needed too (a weapon, fighting skills).
