I first came across John Seymour through his book The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency, which I found not only informative but also really inspiring. Here was a man who was living the dream, being dam near 100% self sufficient, yet at the same time he didn’t come across preachy for it. He just laid out what he knew in entertaining way, accompanied by some really good illustrations.

Anyway not long after I came across a youtube video about that book in which the bloke mentioned he had also branched out into a bit of ‘post apocalyptic fiction’. So I being a fan of that genre anyway I thought I’d order a copy and check it out.

The plot revolves around East Anglian farmer Bob Hurlock who still favours traditional methods over the new style of industrialised ‘London Farming’ now prevalent. Sure enough when the oil runs out and Britain is plunged into chaos, his little farm continues to thrive whilst the rest are in disarray. For a time he attempts to re-teach this forgotten art to those in the surrounding area, that is until the military government have other ideas. Pretty soon the area is overrun by soldiers who finally push the locals too far and some of them, including Bob rise up fight a guerrilla war.

All in all I found it a really good read, although the premise may seem a little farfetched to some, Seymour certainly does a good job illustrating otherwise with his attention to detail and well rounded characters.
