What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9

Call is done, I watched the video you linked to again, plus the next one along - it's plain that you can take a partially-used cartridge out of the stove and store it safely, but I decided not to do that - I'm not off on holiday after all, I'm storing it up as a prep against emergencies. I'll be ordering more CP250 cartridges, and a buddy heater that also uses them, tonight. Thanks again.

Just be aware that those heaters are not as good as the "buddy heater" they lack the flame failure and low oxygen cut off .... But common sense and all that I've got both.....

Is what I have but mine is rothenburg (spl) branded a German firm which usually makes plumbers blowlamp and tools

Added advantage is that the butane/ propane mix works at lower temperature but the price

Never gone wrong but if it gets cold as in below 5°c the output drops as the gas starts to freeze but it's the right price..

Like anything it's as safe as you are careful you can make the bottom one more stable with some little clip on legs

I rather like that - I love the whole parabolic thing it's got going on. And the price is good too. However, it's currently out of stock, and it obviously doesn't use the CP250 cartridges, but they don't list what they *do* use. Certainly not ruling it out for a future purchase, but I'd really like to get heating under my belt. In emergencies, I've got other options, diy stuff really, but as the last month has shown, what I'm increasingly needing (due to age, stress, etc) is something that I can pull out from its case and switch on, like the bistro stove but for heating.

I do confusion well usually about 6am when the alarm goes off I paid £80 for mine about 4 years ago glad I did seeing the price now

It does highlight to everyone to test your kit and get used to it cook a pan of soup tomorrow or boil some water just to get an idea on how long it'll take.... Tip lightweight pans work well Vs some great big cast iron kitchen pan


Be aware that butane is heavier than air and it will freeze at about 0°c ... It's best stored in a shed out of the house like all flamable stuff I mist any cartridges with 3in1 oil before storage as it stops them Rusting

I'm a bit concerned about that too, but in the first push to get some heating sorted, I decided it was worth the whole thing of putting my eggs in one basket, just to get it done. And in fact, I had emails this morning that both the heater and the cartridges have been despatched, so that's something.

I've got four of those, C206! Unuseable to me, as I stored the stove the wrong way, and it rusted up, which is why I bought the bistro stove. If you're ever south of London, please feel free to tell me so you can pick them up! Or can they be sent through the post?

I have a couple of litres of bioethanol, actually - making a heater in a used tin by rolling cardboard in it and soaking in bioethanol, is that the bushcraft version or is that something different? Anyway, it's sitting there, ready for when I can get to this stuff. I've spent a lot of time on this during this week, and I have a delayed Christmas family thing tomorrow!

So true - it took about half the day to do it all, and then another bit of time to order the heating part, but really well worth it.

The spray is a good idea - I have some old oil I could use for that. I also have a tiny brick shed with old kitchen cupboards in where the cartridges could be stored, but that's a job for later on, they'll have to be stored in the cubbyhole by the back door for now. At least it's a bit cold there but not freezing

We have been monitoring our fuel usage ( costs) over the last four weeks. It’s surprisingly reasonable under the current circumstances. Of course , prices are due to rise, but at least we know we are as economical as we can comfortably be.That is domestic fuel of course ( for us) its electricity and solid fuel. Petrol is the biggie for me with my commute,but what to do? No commute,no well paid job As my dad always said though ,”accept and adapt “. Any errands I do now are done on the way home from work to save petrol and more importantly,precious time.

On the fuel theme,this weekend I have a lot of wood to process. My builder friend has gifted me a LOT of fence posts.( He will be happy with the eight cans of Guinness Mrs J drops off tomorrow ) I don’t mess around though. I set up three saw horses ,and I use two chainsaws to smash it up. I always keep my worn chains for this particular work - I call them ‘burner chains’ - I put an edge on them and go. If I hit nails and such ,no problem. Then chuck the chains.

I will start some greenhouse work this week.Just compost into pots ,water and settle.Then in a couple of weeks I will start sowing - in the propagator for a start.

Hurrah! Power outage again due to storm malek. Head torches that Santa brought for the whole family are all in use. All three teenagers knew where they were and just got on with it. That's a prepping win

Our power has just come back on so just in case it vanishes again I'm making sure torches are all fully charged. It hasn't made much difference to me to be honest. There are definite advantages to living a low tech life.
