So I have been looking at a few places other than this forum other the last couple of months while deciding to become more involved in preparing for the worst. Most of them have been American and many of them have been based on advice which sees to come from the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons to most of us). Most of the advice I've read has made me think that one of the best things I can store food wise is whole wheat grain.
I love making home-made bread and I can't think of anything better flavour, cost and taste wise than fresh bread made with freshly ground flour. The trouble is I have no idea how to go about getting my hands on any! Google searches have brought no lack of pages telling me how to store the stuff and a reasonable few about how to cook it. I have yet however to have any luck finding wheat for sale. I live in a city so I can't just wander over to my local farmer and enquire.
So I was wondering, do any of you store/use wheat and where on earth did you get it from. and yes I do use 5 sentences where one would suffice
your best way might be to try and speak to people you know and see if they know any farmers. This will be the best way to buy it cheap. i buy about 25kg for £3.
You can buy it online from places like http://www.naturallygoodfood.co.uk but you will get stung on cost and big time for delivery of a good qty. Other than that have you any farm shops or country stores just out of town ?
Some more here at about £21 for 25kg delivered http://www.browfarmwheatproducts.co.uk/ ... .htm#wheat ...still expensive though, it would be much more economical to drive some miles to a farm. Asian Supermarkets have all sorts of stuff as well but i'm not sure if they would have wheat
Just thought I would restart a seven year old thread! Wheat can be got direct from the farm but different strains are grown for different purposes, whether it be for animal feed or baking etc. Not sure that they would do what you wanted them to if they were the wrong strain. I suppose in a wtshf situation as long as it provides you with sustenance, but if you bought a lot and intended using what you store it might not work out so well.
A couple of my farm contracts are arable, I will see what I can find out.

Well were missing out on an obvious prep then! If stored correctly it will outlast us, flour has a vastly shorter shelf life. In the event of drawn out problem it would greatly increase food options.
Had a grain mill sent over from the states a while back so one less hurdle to negotiate.
Should be picking up my wheat next week, foc! The farmer said he won't miss a couple of hundred weight out of 300 tonnes.
I bought a mill from a uk site a few years ago and store quite a large amount of wheat grain, it stores better than flour , next some one will say rice is a Chinese thing and not in our culture! wheat is in our culture its were flour comes from!!
Ha ha, I hear you tigs! The mills are pretty useful, mine says it will do everything from wheat to beans and yes even that foreign rice stuff. I expect the wheat that I am picking up is grown for something other than flour, but in times of need. Will grind some when I get it and get the boss to make something with it, report to follow.
