Non-electric lighting ?

We can't remember, but it's not a lot. And I can't find the stuff anywhere, - will look on ebay later. It was a smell like parma violets. Bugging me now that I can't find it.

What's everyones preference between hurricane lamps and oil lamps?

And what burns in oil lamps and where do you get it?

I've got one oil lamp which burns, umm, lamp oil
Only got one bottle in stock but I think it came from a hardware shop and its odourless.

Great post, do you have any odea of how much paraffin an average Hurricane lamp uses in say an hour?

Also, what can you add to them to make them smell nicer?

A Tilley Lantern full of Paraffin about 1 Ltr will run for about 6 or 7 hours with the power of a 40 to 60 watt bulb and it generates about the equivalent heat of a one bar electric fire. Around my area paraffin costs 90pence a Ltr at the pump, buy in bulk and you can hedge against future increases.I use Tilley lamps in my shed for both light and heat in the winter and they can be used as a stand by for use in power cuts.

Of course there is LED.Yes I know it's electric,but it's a damn sight more economical than paraffin.Paraffin is expensive,smelly and a fire hazard.I use it in the yard and green house BUT,LEDis cheap.you can even get LED light bulbs now that use a fraction of even what the newer "Eco" bulbs use.How do I know it's economical?I turned my emergency LED lamp on at 9am Wednesday and turned it off 9 am the following Wednesday. It was still giving off acceptable light!
Chuck in some rechargeable batteries and a solar recharger(you don't have to be in spain for it to work )and you almost have perpetual motion!

Funnily enough thats what we are talking about in another forum, I'm going to look into swapping all my spots for LED ones. But I still want paraffin and lamps because we get such a lot of powercuts.

I haven't seen paraffin at the pumps for donkey's years.

I have 3 wind up lanterns. No batteries to run out of, happy days.
Granted they do not give off heat but I have an extra jumper in the wardrobe, even happier days.

No not the 1950's, In the North West!

Paraffin on the pump at the CALDO depot in St.Helens and only 70pence a Ltr up until May then it went up to today's price of 90, They do a lot of the pre packed Paraffin all over the country but I don't Know at what price, but if you have wind ups, who needs Paraffin? just elbow grease win, win.
