Just bought a calor gas heater to supplement the wood burner in case of power cuts this winter. Had a trial run this evening (~8° outside), works well but don't site under a smoke alarm

Unless it's a thermoplec / temperature alarm is should be ok unless it's burning off dust / transit oil etc

Oh that's true. A new calor gas heater makes a horrible smell and set off our alarm once in the last house Nurseandy

Thanks both. It was OK on first two settings, triggered the alarm (twice, oops ) on the highest setting. Maybe it is just the newness burning off

Another prep today and a vital one - the farmer who is responsible for our private water supply at our new house knocked on the door to introduce himself. We invited him in for a brew and he stayed for about an hour but crucially I told him about my job as water engineer before switching to nursing and he's keen on me helping to maintain/troubleshoot the borehole & cistern. Result.

59 pots of jam so far. Blackcurrant today should add a dozen at least. Plums when ripe and bramble and apple later. before anyone says I am in danger health wise eating all that sugar, don't worry, only a little is for us. I supply my kids and their family, a heap is for my brother who is always bringing us stuff so it's nice to give back. the rest is as gifts for neighbours and friends as thank yous. I expect to have approaching 100 jars by the end of season provided nothing happens to the plum crop before it ripens.

I seem to be making far more jam and chutney than usual this year. I think it is my spidey senses tingling about the coming winter. The problem is that I haven't started yet on the cherry plums, blackberries or the neighbours apple tree and I am already out of space to store the stuff. I am going to have to get creative. If I still have too much when next season comes around I may take a look at the old CJ Berry "Jam Wine" recipe and turn it into alcohol....

Jams and chutneys are always a good investment.
Boring food, add jam or chutney
Emergency gift, a jar or two of jam and/or chutney
Swapsies with the neighbours, jam or chutney
Tipping the Tradesman, jam or chutney.

My preps this week include filling a four gallon jerry with Kerosene.
Dumping, flushing and filling my water jerries.
Dropping my new (to me) pressure lamp and Dad's old Primas stove off at my brother's place, hes a bit of a lamp fettler so he gets to play with some old gear and I get another lamp sorted.

Batteries..... You've reminded me to get more rechargeable AAA's
