I'm the original poster :D
The 240v one works perfectly- probably something to do with never having been used  I am keen on trying out a 12v one though, price dependent. I'm still at work so unlikely to get a chance to tinker tonight (or Tomorrow) but will look at the rating plate and go googling asap

I'm wondering if you could keep the original pump and put it on a programmable timer say 15 mins per hour at night

Then in daylight use something like this it claims to move (the bigger version) 200l of air an hour

I've been exploring 12v alternatives to the 240v pump and have found a 12v, 25w unit that'll work. By my (well, jenny's) sums this will require a 200w solar panel to comfortably charge a 110v deep cycle battery to allow it to run 24/7 (this is allowing for extended overcast days and manufactures exaggerated claims), happy to be corrected though.
I've looked on amazon and eBay and of course there's a bewildering array of varying quality. Does anyone have any real world practical experience of different units please? Presumably I also need a controller too to stop the battery discharging into the solar panel overnight?
TIA.

Check out Facebook marketplace and gumtree and to a lesser extent, eBay by nearest location..
You need a panel that is nominally about 18v open circuit voltage. Charge controller a pwm one at about £
8 on Amazon. If you want to buy a new panel, try something from... Eco-worthy ... Search Amazon for eco worthy solar panel. Or go to eco-worthy website. Sorry can't be do links at the moment
