Regarding Waterproofing Your Clothes, Bags etc.

Post by Paracord1945 »

Hello all.

I am not sure if you have heard of Nikwax?

It's a really good product for water proofing your bags and clothing etc. I have used it on my Rucksacks nylon and canvas ones to be precise and both work well. I would highly recommend it as I have used it in a rain shower before and it proves it's worth. The water just beads and runs off, great stuff. The product is fast drying too once applied. I have also gone as far to using it on my walking shoes.

If any of you are interested in getting hold of some here is the link. https://www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/t ... -spray-on/

Thanks.

I haven't tried spraying any clothes, but I should get some of that for a few items at some point.

I have some of this for my winter cycling shoes, which are leather and some kind of imitation leather. You can use it on trainers.

NB. This comes in two versions, sponge-on and spray on. They look similar. The sponge is obviously for shoes. The spray is also for shoes I reckon, as it only covers a small area and doesn't have the lever like the one in your link. I have the spray version. Note that the image and description says sponge-on but I received the spray on. If you read the customer questions you will see it's the spray on. The description on my order says sprayer. It's Amazon Lucky Dip.

I also have Nikwax leather conditioner in the sponge-on bottle, which is described as conditioner/waterproofer, which I use for my leather walking boots. It's recommended to condition leather boots every 6 months, and keep them in a dark place. I keep mine in the box, wrapped inside in the brown paper they came in.

I also keep a 60ml tube of Nikwax leather waterproof wax in my long term bugout kit. You only need to put a small amount on every now and then so it would last a long time.

Some tents need their seams sealing, and there are special products for this.

Used it to waterproof a whole parachute a couple of times, worked well in light downpours.
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

If your bike is black, each time you get on and off the bike gets a quick polish.

Many years ago we used one of the Nikwax wash in fabric products to proof a cheap sleeping bag. A couple of months later this was used unzipped on top of a double duvet in a chilly youth centre, One day we woke up to discover the roof over our bed was leaking. The sleeping bag had accumulated a fair size puddle between our 2 bodies but the water had not gone any further.
Hats off to Nikwax.
