Thin Bleach/Sodium Hypochlorite for Water Storage
Thin Bleach/Sodium Hypochlorite for Water Storage
I have purchased 20x 10 Litre containers for water storage. Various guidance suggests adding a few drops of 5-6% non thickened or fragranced bleach before storage. I can't find this actually in stock at any local shops, and online the postage makes it unnecessarily expensive for something that should be a few quid. Is there another option? Do I actually need to do this for water storage considering tap water is already treated with sodium hypochlorite?

Some preppers 'refresh' their tap water stores every six months or so.JWR wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 6:49 pm I have purchased 20x 10 Litre containers for water storage. Maybe use Milton or water purifying tablets. Shouldn't really be necessary.

Store your water away from sunlight as algae is a risk.

I don't add anything.
My process:
Wash with soapy water when new and rinse
Steralise with Milton tablets
Fill with tap water
Keep dark
Re-fill every 6 months to a year. Maybe re-steralise at this point.

Liquid bleach doesnt keep well - It will slowly turn into salt water. (Ask me how I know
) Baby sterilising tablets are now my go-to solution. The Asda ones give these instructions but others are much the same.
Water Purification: to destroy harmful bacteria found in contaminated water and protect against illness caused by waterborne diseases. Dissolve 1 tablet per 25L of drinking water (50L if low risk area). Leave for 10 minutes before drinking.
