I used to make a tinned peach wine years ago. But that was with proper demijohns and finings etc. It all came to a grinding halt when we discovered that the flatmate both had an alcohol problem and had found my stash of maturing wines.

Biggest issue is exhausting it safely the exhaust connections / pipework all really need to be outside. And the exhaust gets very very hot

If it's in a shed a DIY side install of the unit would be a better option....

Using a turret plate

This lets you bolt it to the wall and pass the exhaust, air intake for the burner and fuel line outside. So any exhaust leak happens outside.. likewise any fuel leaks are outside

Day three of "it'll only take two days tops" to replace your gas pipes.

I've now been given a date of the 15th..... (6 days) you can't make this up.

Luckily I haven't had to take time off work as many would of had to.

Copied this for him Andy but he seems to know already what to do. He can be handy at times.
Now if he just knew of a top hotel that was giving huge discount and had enormous fluffy white towels and a pool... he'd be a lot handier really.

Biggest issue is they are very power hungry for about a minute and a half needing a 20a supply for the glow plug then it drops off to about a 1a draw continuous....

Has anybody heard of diesel heaters ? Apparently used foir garages and caravans? You sit them outside and the heat comes in a window or something like that. Husband was visiting somebody yesterday who has classic bikes in his big garage and he uses one of these heaters.

Diesel heating: My brother lives ‘off grid’ in a big Romany Van. He has a huge awning at the side.There he has his diesel heater,and it means he can spread out there in Winter. The Van has a wood stove,but it appears he prefers the diesel job. He burns red diesel,although that’s not easily gotten now,diesel, paraffin,and when he does work for a customer who is a technician at the airport,he burns aviation fuel! It is warm! In fact,the floor space he has is as big as the downstairs of our cottage,and as an alternative,that could work for us too. You just have to be aware of ventilation and exhaust.

You can still legally buy and use red for domestic heating applications. Our boat yard sells it at the pump had to fill a form in last time round but meh

Today I tested a homemade wonder bag. Potatoes:
Brought chopped up potatoes (for mash)to the boil with lid on for 6 mins. Put straight in wonder bag, although I did line with an emergency foil blanket in case of spills. I left it about 7 hours as I started it too early. The potatoes are cooked, still warm. Pan still hot to the touch and stream escaped. Amazed!

Wanting to try soup next. This really would reduce fuel usage in a black out. Bring to the boil on a camp stove. And finish cooking in a wonder bag .

My preps are turning towards the Event in late December. Talking to my butcher at the weekend and asked him if bird flu was likely to lead to shortages. He said they could not get hold of ducks at present and it was very unlikely there would be any goose available. Does that tally with what you are hearing Jansman?

They sell lovely turkeys reared in Kent and should still be able to get hold of enough as long as we order in November but they are all too big for us. Last year I thought I’d get a crown but all that happened was they cut the legs off a big turkey and I still ended up with too much leftover. He says crowns are very bad value this year for some reason

So I thought I might try a capon as a change. Bigger than a chicken but smaller than a turkey. From what I’ve read the meat may have more flavour than an ordinary chicken, slightly gamey. Advice from the forum’s resident expert would be gratefully received.

But the only way to find out if it suits us is to try it. My butcher thinks he should be able to get hold of one from their supplier down in Kent but he’ll know in good time for me to order a turkey if that’s what I have to fall back on. Husband and I would be very happy with a nice bit of beef but the howls of outrage from the offspring at the thought put paid to that idea. We usually have beef for New Year anyway
