Hungry kids
Not worried about powering the whole house, just eating hot food, getting a brew, seeing through the dark, and staying warm.

Re: Hungry kids
Primary school kids in Scotland get free school meals and we are working towards giving all school kids free school meals.
I would also bring back the milk.

Which? surveyed 2,791 adults online in early August and found that, among those that said they are struggling the most financially, 50 per cent said that their household was skipping meals.
Nearly half – 46 per cent – of consumers said that they were finding it harder to eat healthily compared to before the cost of living crisis.
Some 78 per cent said that they were finding day-to-day costs very hard to cope with.
Based on the responses to their survey, Which? estimates that 6.3 million adults are in households that are skipping meals as a result of the rising cost of living.
They estimate that 24.3 million adults are also finding it harder to eat healthily as a result of soaring prices.

A kilo of oats is 75p ,filling cheap and very healthy.
Don't have to cook , check out overnight oats .
So why are kids hungry.

Re: Hungry kids
A lot of them are working families
Daughter in law a teacher son is finance manager for a cluster of schools and some stores are horrible
I presume some people cannot manage their money or spend it unwisely but..the stories im hearing are different to that idea
The working families on a ..average income ...dont receive extra help ..the bills have risen the cost of living is awful and they are struggling
The food banks espically in my neck of the woods in West yorks are seeing a unprecedented demand of working middle class families ..most in tears ..who are paying their bills mortgage rent utilities and having a roof over their head but nothing left for food
My son had to go to a school in Leeds to help turn it around
He kept getting..Sir ..I like your shoes
Some of these kids didn't have a pair of shoes so a clothing donation point was set up
I dont know weather its regional or not but I do know that a lot of people who work are suffering
I do know if Mr GG and myself had young kids when we found out about his leukemia and ended up on practically zero money as he was still employed then sick pay then half pay then nothing ...we couldn't have fed anyone else
Its a horrible state to be in and a lot of systems are broken
There are hungry kids out there for whatever reason ..and there shouldn't be ..not in this supposedly modern day we live in
Re: Hungry kids
Most people will only know to cook porridge on a stove. Some might not even think of oats at all. They are used to buying a box of cereal and milk. Cereal and milk could get expensive if you have kids. Anyway, they are still going to be hungry by dinner (lunch) time even if they have porridge breakfast.
People run out of money for all sorts of reasons. Sudden drop in income, eg sickness/disability/redundancy, sudden expenses, and now inflation.

Here's a problem:
June: The UK is leading the way in providing vital military assistance to Ukraine. Today’s announcement brings the total UK military support since the outbreak of war to £2.3 billion
Charity begins at home. Enough is enough.

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.
Re: Hungry kids
I’m pretty sure you can survive on porridge but can you eat it every day? There’s also milk to buy and sugar or salt (I offend my Scottish forefathers by having mine with honey, the horrors) so it is just not a case of buying oats.
I’ve said this before on here. My best mate’s missus is a primary teaching assistant at our old primary. It’s located in an area of special economic interest which is a PC way of saying FUBAR. There’s been no jobs there for years, the ones that are there are low paid or are taken up by people temporarily living there. There’s been generational unemployment and often generational drug and alcohol abuse. The school is one of the worst in Scotland on the league tables and despite the best efforts of everyone up there, there are kids going hungry. My mate’s wife buys a ton of breakfast bars to give to kids who often come in without breakfast. No matter your opinion on benefits, the simple fact is that kids are indeed beginning to starve, hell we are even seeing some kids come into hospitals with rickets and that needs to stop.

Re: Hungry kids
If a child is hungry because a parent or parents are drug or alcohol dependent then help from social services at first if this is unsuccessful remove hungry children.
Their is no excuse to not feed your children .
