Re: A question about bartering
There is a TV series called Jericho. It takes place after the US is attacked with Nuclear Weapons.
Once they start getting back on their feet each town shuts itself off from outsiders. One town acts a trading place where people can take their goods for trading. Everyone has to leave their weapons outside and only the people running it are armed and they police it.
They take a small percentage or charge an entrance fee (I can't remember) and everyone can trade safe in the knowledge that it is all overseen by the people who run that town.
It is a good idea but how that might work over here in a post SHTF situation, I am not sure.
Be lucky (and interchangable)

Trouble is,most of us here don't do face to face transactions we are specialised. I worked markets for a good time. There's no science with trading, you just have to know your Market and read people. Simple.Just takes 20 yrs to learn.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

Re: A question about bartering
i skill i learnt recently is basket weaving. you can use any type of reed or willow and it works great. i can only make small round baskets at the moment but soon i will have a go at a large square one for storing things. if your willing to put the practice in you can easily get proficient in making the easy baskets in two months (i dont need to follow the instructions no more
) im also looking into basic blacksmithing and when i have the time i will go on a course. i think if you have a skill any settlement will take you in but the problem is it will take a while for these settlements to form.

Re: A question about bartering
once things have settled down post SHTF and people have formed into communities then they will start to barter with other communities, it will be a long time,if ever, before some kind of money will be seen.

It’s pretty obvious that there would be a demand for such a service post S.H.T.F and someone is going to provide it. Over here I’ve always thought that gypsies and Irish travellers would be some of the first to hit on the idea;
• To some extent they already do it, with events such as Appleby horse fair.
• Post S.H.T.F they will almost certainly ‘take to the road’, instead of having the trading area affixed to one location it'll be available to more people.
• There a pretty rough people, who’d be adept at dealing with trouble makers
• Plus they are by their very nature outsiders everywhere they go, which ironically means they’ll probably enjoy a greater degree of trust if things get very tribal between communities.

Re: A question about bartering
Totally agree Trip,
Gypo's are better suited to a post SHTF situation although they will have to eat like the rest of us. Their home is very transportable. Not sure I could get house hooked up to the back of my Astra!!! However, if you need your drive re-tarmaccing after an earthquake has ripped it asunder, they will have the market sown up.

Re: A question about bartering
Would someone please explain in detail the 'two skins' method of bartering which may be used if the parties cannot communicate at all.
I probably have it wrong but it is something like:
You lay out a skin with your offering on.
The other party lays out a skin with what they want to exchange for your offering.
You add or subtract from your offering until you are happy with the exchange.
They add or subtract from their offering until they are happy.
And so on until the deal is made.
I do not remember how you stop the cycle and finally agree or how you take your stuff and leave if it comes to that or even how you stop being based on the head and robbed or even what stops you from robbing.
Does anyone know the true method?
