Storing Potatoes

What’s the best way to store potatoes once they’ve been dug up?

Hessian sacks in a cool dark place (cellar/garage etc). My Gran used to have spuds stored in the cellar in hessian sacks for months on end

This site gives some good advice on storage and also what to check before and during storage http://www.allotment.org.uk/vegetable/p ... -store.php
The best way to store your potatoes is in hessian sacks that you can buy from many of the seed suppliers. You can often pick up paper sacks from chip shops, which will do the job although not as well or even use an old pillow case. Don't store potatoes in plastic bags. You need to exclude light or the potato will turn green but allow them to breathe and moisture to evaporate

I remember that my parents would store potatoes in the celllar without the sacks but in a huge wooden container. There were at least the equivalent of 20 bags of potatoes in it and they would last for our whole family for a year.

What about long term storage?

I’ve had tinned potatoes before, reckon they would be good for literally years. Be a bit tricky to do at home and probably require specialist equipment but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be doable. Probably the most practical solution though would be to dehydrate them.

As long as potatotes are kept in a cool, dark, and frost free environment, they will keep for many months

So the clamp gives you kinda similar results to a cellar.

So maybe dehydrating? Have you got any experinece with that Triple sod or anyone else?

It is aye :)

I’ve always thought Chapel St Leonards was a bit of a peppers’ paradise, you got Crash Bang Wallop and Yabadabadoos there, then Ingoldmells down the road has Yabadabatwos and a decent army surplus/outdoors shop and there are a couple of decent sized carboots every week going on in the surrounding area.
