I can remember my mum standing at the sink with a pair of plyers so she could crack all the bones open to get at all the marrow bone goodness.

LMAO. I wish! Yes. I left school in the mid seventies.
Mum was a pretty poor cook, and home cooking didn't extend much beyond brisket, spuds and tinned veg. Dad used to like Dripping on toast and salads might feature tripe, chitterlings, hodge and braun.
We used to eat some rubbish.
Herbs. Mum never heard of herbs. Just oxo.
Honest jen compare to shop stuff this puts hairs on your chest now as a lady i guess you do not want them but wow it warms you .
I'll give it a go next time I have a chicken carcass. At worst, it should make good stock.

As to diet quality. Dad used to love his dripping and salt. It eventually killed him at 93 :)
It was that mum couldn't cooked that inspired me to mess about with food. Probably started when I put some curry powder in a tin of scotch broth and called it a curry. Plus in the 70s bread shortage, Dad managed to get some yeast and flour and we had a go at making bread. With some of the yeast, Dad showed me how to make ginger beer, so as a thank you, I made him some really rubbish beer. Then i got into making wine and beer. It was me introduced Mum and Dad to herbs, Pizza, pasta etc. Damn, before that, the only pasta we had was spaghetti hoops :)
Mum's sister and her hubby used to love kidneys with the fat on. It killed them at 91 and 88 respectively.
I know diabetes and strokes are a problem with the wrong diet, but if your genes are right and you keep the weight off, you might as well enjoy food.

Anyhow.... I've had a silly cooking session tonight. Just about to post one of my sillier creations over in the 'Ration list' thread.

LOl yup well most of my dads faimly lives to good ages dad only died well long story , but wifess dad had major issues and wife has major heart failure and on the register but hey like we say in truth they took so much from me in life no work no driving no doing anything lol even breathing they moan at lol , the nurses use to call me a walking deadman but hey , these days we try and modirate the food me because i struggle to get solids in again long story but all from my accident body is failing but hey i still love to cook lol .
We try hard or watch our weight hence doign garden and trying to keep moving .

Back to the chicken bone broth honest hon when you have had all you can off the carcass just break it up in a pan get the water red hot then simmer until the bits fall off the bones it is mainly just to flavour like making a stock but then you get all little bits of chicken throw back in and if any scraps throw in and then in the veggies and then spuds i love it all chopped tiny dice and then in the herbs and on a cold day omg a bowl of it and some fresh bread yum .

To the brewing my uncle use to and oh the mistakes he had from exploding bottles to people drinkign a couple of glasses and passing out strong stuff lol like in the good life , we got in to brewing but now gave up as not allowed to drink but we use to do ciders wines and some other bits with special herb lol , but i made a batch out of the scraps from jam making pears cores and apple cores a wine well i made it and tested it and said that is no strong so added a bottle of vodka at bottling time people loved it wanting more but we had 12 bottles in the store cupboard lol we had night stroage in our flat then and the rad was on the wall outside the cupboard well the bottle where pushed back and one night wife said at 3 am what the hell was that a bang hmm well we had some wierd people on the block so figured the door or something then next night another couple opf bangs lol she went i nthe cupboard to get soemthing next day and got a squealch sound ypu the bottle fermented again lol most of the corks whe just holding i mean just on the edge of popping got them out opened then re corked lol .

Oh the fun we had i made a type of potchine and that is rocket fuel mate knocked it back burnb his throat lol .

but jen try and chicken broth/stew on the family i am sure they will say wow mum that has so much flavour i tried to avoid stock cubes now , but on the note of your dad it makes me laugh they say this will kill you this will and so on but funny it never killed generations before us lol , i love the old lady over 100 in a nursing home but still going and said well it is down to the bottle of gin and 20 fags a weeksl ol , we have a lady in our street late 80's came to the street party put us all to shame she was dancing bopping and running like a kid , i did ask her what she takes lol but she just said i love life sorry for the story lolo

I suppose feeding children dumplings would involve the social services these days pure uncomplex carbohydrates.

OMG. Dumplings. Yum Yum. Maximum calories, minimum effort. Must make some.

Social services mustn't have existed back when we got fed orange butties ( nearest thing to our one a day) with sugar or porridge with a tablespoon of the stuff. . I'm too, embarrassed to say what other abject rubbish went into my lunch box. Dad used to drive a bus all day powered by five rounds of Shipam's beef spread on white bread. Not with any of your namby pamby lettuce and tomatoes.

Not that it's easy to get kidney unless you go to a proper butchers shop
