Community Orchards ???

Post by jennyjj01 »

I just stumbled across the fact that there's a local one.
I've never even heard of the concept.

E.g https://www.applesandorchards.org.uk/

Some members of the community acquire some land and build an orchard. I get that.
These orchards may be open to the public. Community events might take place there.

But then I'm lost. Who owns the trees? Who harvests the fruit? What becomes of it? Do scrumpers get shot?

I've started to google it, but can anyone explain it in numpty terms?

After all, post apocalypse, those who create food will be powerful. Is it time to join these communities?

There's sort of one Nearish us sort of. It's in the grounds of an old castle and the owners maintain the trees (apple only ) and the fruit is freely available to anyone who may be visiting to either pick or collect windfalls.
Not a true community orchard but the privilege doesn't seem to be abused. People just take one or two apples each.

It seems some are registered charities, too.
I'm going to pay a visit to the local one and see if there's anyone there to ask.

I’m planting a stealth orchard at the back of where I live. Every year, I plant one or two trees at the back of where I live, in years to come and long after I’m gone, there should be free food for all.

You can blame Ron Finlay for this!

That’s his Ted talk and it is simply amazing. The Gangsta Gardener indeed!

The pictures are some of the cherry trees and a James Raeburn apple tree which is local to Edinburgh, it’s special to me as my old Cocker’s ashes are planted underneath it.

The cherry is around 6ft high now, the apple only went in last year and it still establishing itself. There’s golden delicious and others there, I did have two pear trees but the deer got them. All hidden within sight and unless you looked for them, you wouldn’t know they were there as it’s only the dog walkers go along it. My neighbours think I’m mad….

I should add, there’s tons of brambles, rose hips and a huge cooking apple tree at the back of where we are. We are a huge dead end street that was the last street in Edinburgh and it is surrounded by a woodland so it’s easy to do this.

Others are beginning to do similar… 😉

I wouldn't mind planting a small tree.
Not much point in me planting apples, because next door but one has a huge apple tree. I'm sure I could get some if I asked.
