UK veg shortage possible

UK growers of certain vegetables are saying they may have to cut production due to rising costs of energy and fertiliser (which is made from gas) and labour shortages. Affected crops include 'top fruit' (fruit grown on trees), root veg, and veg grown under glasshouses such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Broccoli is another crop affected. Some veg eg cucumber is being sold at less than cost. The farmers want the cap on seasonal worker visas lifted.
Of course some veg will simply be imported instead, and this is increasing already.


Less energy is used in warmer countries, eg tomatoes grown in Spain without needing heating.

It’s no biggy to us here. As a lad,stuff like tomatoes and cucumbers were seasonal most of the time. I don’t like cucumbers anyway. If there was a shortage * now*, we have plenty of tinned tomatoes, peas,beans,baked beans, and even tinned potatoes. Along with that is salad greens in the poly tunnel,and outside kale. There are perpetual cabbage plants,perpetual onions ,and a lovely one - Jerusalem artichokes! Lots of home grown spuds and loads of home grown dry beans too.

If there is a warning this Winter ,we’ll deal with what is grown and available,and what we can grow. We won’t die.

I'm NOT denying that the report is true, but when I saw the source was Breitbart, I googled the words in the title. That gave me reams and reams of shady right-wing sources, all putting a right wing 'This is bad' slant on the news. One of the less right wing sources was The GraniadWhich at least, referred to the 'Top 3,000 polluters' getting closed down.
So. Right or wrong headed government? That's political. But I'd rather see 3,000 big polluters shut down than have them subsidised. We have the situation that feeding humanity is killing the biosphere and thus killing humanity. A lose-lose situation. Feed humanity less and we may survive longer.

I think the underlying truth is that they are indeed telling those farms to clean up their act 'or else'. But the action to clean up is seen as impractical.

Dutch agriculture, especially intensive cattle farming has been unsustainable for years. Herds need to be reduced and kept outdoors more. Feed needs to be grown with less fertiliser.
Some of the 3000 projects under threat include building industry where Nitrogen emissions from transport are the big issue.

The Dutch government is simply trying to comply with very strict EU emissions targets. To do so, they've made it national policy to dramatically reduce cattle and dairy farming within their economy.

In all probability, this will lead to political tensions among the very many political parties there. Backlash? Calls to break with the EU in a few years time???? Civil unrest????

You sound like you grow the same as we use to on the allotment but at home we have cut back on the amount due to well no one to give to , but the question is the jerusalem artichokes , do you find they give you real bad gas , the wife and i use to love them lol but omg you had to wear a gas mask after eating lol .
Edit i did try putting winter savoury and summer savory in the pan as they say that helps with gas from beans but never helped we still tooted up a storm

They are gasful! I find that prepping and dropping in water for overnight can slow that a little..I think!

They are gasful! I find that prepping and dropping in water for overnight can slow that a little..I think!

Oki try that way , i will order some now lol , we left all ours when we moved here , i only grew them first time because the wife loves sunflowers and we wanted to screen our allotment from the sun to have a patch to sit in the shade , but since we moved here i never grew them as you know they can be invasive but as i will have a spare raised bed i think iwill pop some in there i use to love them but like i say never ate them if we had hospital appoinments or people coming over lol
