Some notes from an arthritis ridden household which may or may not be useful.
T'other half has had arthritis for about ten years now. It has cost him the teaching job he loved and bouts of being unable to play guitar which he lives for. So far he has refused the offered knee replacements and other ops having seen many people get less than wonderful results. If it is a choice of replacements or wheelchair, he will say yes. The consultant was expecting the wheelchair about 5 years ago but he has staved it off so far with the following:
Vitamins. High dose cod liver oil - a couple of grams a day, glucosamine, general multivits.
Exclusion diet. (This is tough) identified an atypical intolerance to even a hint of wheat in his diet along with a couple of other more minor intolerances that all added up.
Sugar: He quit this completely a month ago and is noticing a huge diffference in his levels of inflammation.
Mobilisation: Working the joints gently through a ful range of movement is painful but keeps mobility and does improve them a lot after a flare given a painful week or two of rehab.
Meditation: He has some techniques which help on bad days but take so much concentration they are nto a lot of use for every day.
Painkillers. He does not tolerate Tramadol. GP prescribes the paracetamol & codeine 30mg tabs to use and he has had many months at the max permitted per day. At present he is finding an "alternative" smoke is more effective than anything else and this has given his liver a break from the paracetamol. He has discussed with his consultant who was happy but is not allowed to prescribe the NHS version.
The diet changes and mobilisation are the things that had the biggest general impact." Smoking" had the biggest pain impact.

I don't really buy into that weight thing - I know very thin people who are crippled by arthritis.

CBD worked in the past, I was buying the gummies on a BOGOF deal but the company I was buying them from stopped the smaller tubs and only started selling a tub at £99. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cost effective but I felt paying £99 for gummies was beyond me even if it was a BOGOF deal. I have worked a lot of overtime recently so I think I will bite the bullet and order them tomorrow.GillyBee wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 5:23 pm Some notes from an arthritis ridden household which may or may not be useful.

CBD has yet to be properly tested, the nurse was a bit meh when I said I was thinking of buying them but I did also say that they had previously dampened down the pain and even if it was a placebo for me, they still worked, she agreed in that case to just go for them. I will look at Cod Liver Oil…
She said the weight was putting pressure on my knee and that losing weight would help. I got a mini MOT, BP is a bit high and there’s a multitude of blood tests happening but I’m fine otherwise. Just standard middle age Scot stuff but I don’t smoke and my drinking is not that bad, I just need to stop gusts of wind blowing me into Greggs….

Thanks Lil! I think you're right. I just won't relax while I'm there - people laughing, me holding the baby, five adults, two of whom could be incubating the blasted disease. The uncertainty of going/not going is making me miserable in itself, so ... I'm Not Going.diamond lil wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 4:09 pm Arzosah going as things are now won't help anybody or anything, it will just stir things up and muddly the waters. Sit tight and support her from here.

We tried out the CBD for a while. CBD Brothers was the most cost effective we could find for a decent quality product that actually had a noticeable amount of CBD in it. You can also get CBD tea from Grape Tree that t'other half likes.

The thread is ‘this week’ ,but it seems my preps are every day at the moment…
During ( later) today ,steadily ,I have a small gate to make into the Summer House area. We call it Beach Hut That won’t take long. It’s to keep an eye on the dog to be honest whilst crashed out in the sunshine. I have plenty of kindling sticks, plenty, but I’ll still cut yet another satisfying bag full in the workshop ,as it’s a most satisfying job.Quick eye over the birds ,and it’s all good exercise in between.
Yesterday I went around fire extinguishers and checked all that, showed Mrs J ( again) where all emergency lighting ,batteries, charging ,cooking and the like is ,in case of…emergencies Sorted paperwork that covers pensions, savings ,insurance, updated wills through my union .Indeed dealing with my union has been superb.
I have been a member of USDAW since ,well, forever, and only had the odd enquiries, but my late step dad pushed it and told me it was my work insurance . How true. They will be dealing with my six months sick pay/ holidays/ and redundancy. They are aware of where I am, but will still cover my future * return to work* . They can then cover me for assistance in government claims afterwards, which provided I survive, will be my move forward. Effectively,my Prepping plan is to survive this, move on essentially into retirement, and develop a different way of life ,indeed better ,without ridiculous hours ,stress and obvious unwell being. There’s so much left to do ,and ya gotta have a plan. I ain’t been told I’m dead yet!
Very interesting how this Prepping has evolved for me/ us. Since the beginning,it’s always been enough stored grub for the family - in case economical problems or emergencies cropped up.And it happened at times. We had emergency kit,for the same reasons. I have never ( really) been a * worried- about- the - zombies - attack * and all that I had a GHB and gear in my motor in case cr*p happened, and I had to leg it home. Cannot drive now! So the emergency bag has been put in youngest girl’s car,as she is the outdoor type ,drives a lot,and does tbh, live a bit On - The - Edge at times.
My emergency kit has been changed to household, hotel, and a hospital visiting bag. And there’s still a torch and Swiss Army Knife in there! The whole Prepping set up ,when thinking about it ,from beginning to now ,had adapted well. Right now,our system is helping well towards our new lifestyle, eating ,repairing, health, and possible problems in case of economic * delays* etc. It’s worked pretty well.
So as we all comment about outside criticism of Preppers,it’s good to remind and justify what we do.Simply the fact that we do it to prepare to help us in some of the most basic problems is reason enough I reckon.
