I've been keeping an eye on local town council meeting minutes as they are my landlord, and it seems the letting agent will be putting the fees up this year. So this week I'm starting to keep an eye out for rental properties and will start bits and pieces of not 'packing' as such, but more 'consolidation' in case when the contract comes round the rent is increased a lot. Ideally I would stay here at least another year, but if the rent becomes prohibitive, then I will have to move. Better to start thinking about this now, rather than getting a nasty shock in a month or two. Even more belt tightening is a given. Ho hum.

Happy new year all.
Today's prepping is removing the bathroom tiles ready for the bathroom fitter coming later this week. It will be good to have a shower that works rather than one which goes hot and cold and waits until your back is turned before changing. We are getting a walk-in type rather than one over the bath so that, come old age, we can have a seat in there if needed.
Most other prepping is on hold at the moment until we get a new kitchen too as the one we have I think is original to the house (70's build) and has holes in the cupboard doors, work surface etc etc. After that, I will be able to take advantage of my lovely pantry.

How's the tile removal going, are they coming off ok? What is the background, plaster? I assume the tiler will tank the walls before tiling. I believe nowadays some tilers use a product that comes on a roll, rather than painted on. Mine was epoxy grouted rather than tanked. Very rare for tilers to use epoxy though.

The tiles are coming off reasonably easily. Not quite as easily as in one house when I removed the bottom layer of tiles and the rest fell off. One friend removed the tiles and the wall fell down. We are having panels put on the walls, rather than tiles but putting them on top of the tiles would mean they would stand proud of the door and window surrounds so it will look better if we remove the tiles first. I think there might be a fight over who has the first shower when the room's complete.

Oh, I forgot to say, the background is plasterboard. The tiles have been stuck straight onto it withough any preparation by the look of things.

Doing ok for now and not short of money but I feel we (really I) waste a lot on food. I buy stuff when I'm too tired to cook the stuff we already have. Also I'm doing up this house as it will (surely) be the last house we have, so I want it to be perfect. So, sort of wasting money in giving away new good bedlinen to the family and replacing it all with microfibre which is lightweight, easy to handle and dry. But I cant wrestle heavy wet cotton in a tiny house trying to get it over doors to dry etc, impossible
I sort of feel I should be holding onto money because things will def get worse this year but at same time the buying power of that money is shrinking fast.
Also got to revamp the back garden and put up a fence - have ordered a shed at £1500 and now the husband says he doesn't know what he'll use it for

Ouch to the shed, Lil, I hope you can find a workaround.

I know what you mean about needing to hold on to your money but also needing to spend it because it's losing its purchasing power. There's a list of stuff I need to buy/replace in the house, starting with a settee, and I can't quite make myself spend the money.

Microfibre sheets is an interesting idea! Do you have a linkie, and do you know what the texture's like? I only have one warm winter sheet, another one would be nice. That's another thing I need to add to!

Arzosah I got one set and it was so good I've just bought another two. It's like a very soft very fine flannelette feel, and dries fast.

If you're having panels put up, I presume the background's not important, so should be straightforward. I don't know anything about them, have seen them in one or two hotels.
