Soldiers day to day kit

Hi all, stumbled across this with during a new year's day hangover YouTube surf. It's an interview with a UK volunteer who went over to Ukraine to fight. Obviously some shooty soldiery stuff (of which I have zero knowledge or experience) but more interesting is his day to day kit list for living six months with minimal infrastructure, ie Kelly kettles, spare socks, hot water bottle(!) etc, practicle stuff.
Worth a watch for ghb/bob ideas.

So in a nutshell. Forget pretending to be Rambo. Concentrate on the simple low tec basics to stay warm, dry, cleanish and hot water/food. Not forgetting the Yorkshire teabags.

I'd not seen a Ghillie/Kelly kettle before. It's an interesting idea. The nearest equivalent I have is a folding titanium wood stove and a titanium pot to go on top.
The Ghillie is a much bigger surface area to water depth ratio compared to my setup, so will heat the water a lot quicker. But they are quite bulky, you need a mug as well, the whole setup isn't the lightest, and you can only boil water in them (of course you could put a pan on the base fire instead of the kettle).

For his purposes, speed and simplicity, plus wanting lots of hot water, the kettle would be ideal.

I have a Kelly. Simples. Every now and again I boil enough water and put it into my flask for tea. It’s quick !Just because I am wanting to save electricity,and I have - literally - tonnes of fuel.

Kelly kettles have been around for ever, mine is 20plus years old. Nothing to break on it. You can get a pan rest that sits in the top so you're getting the super hot flames out of the top, I have one, it's OK but makes it all a bit wobbly but OK ish in a pinch.
They're best used as intended just for boiling water for which they are excellent.

Just had a nerd-out
Kelly/Ghillie/Volcano kettles were first sold in the late 1920's (although the idea is probably older).

So, take loads of socks and tea and keep yourself as clean and dry as possible.
Don't bother buying cheap versions of fancy kit as its all just DEADWEIGHT.

For some brands they do a trivit that's sits over the chimney so you can boil water and cook at the same time ..

I got a big storm kettle years ago it's great for off grid campsites that allow fires or a BBQ stand the bowl on the BBQ run it off wood sticks from work/ found in hedge bottoms lots of hot water for free

Most know that boiling water can use a lot of fuel to boil a few cups of water due to the ineffectiveness of the standard whistling camp kettle be it on gas or over a fire

And off grid you need lots of hot water for cleaning pots / washing yourself / Yorkshire tea
